I think this is a big big mistake if true. I'll probably cancel my PSVR order, and the PS4 would be my first and LAST SONY console.

Yeah, that and not buying any Sony published games; already the reason why i'm skipping R&C. I'll be keeping an eye on the NX and if it's going to be the only normal console from now on (I have doubts about that, there might not be one at all) i'll just move there and play whatever (few?) third party games get released there, and the traditionally-on-PS-niche-japanese-games on Vita/PC.

how does switching to PC make Sense if all PC gaming is about newer hardware every month?

Can't wait for E3. Everything is turning out exactly the way they said it would since before the PS4 launched. X86 and the standard GPU was a decision to create a scalable platform from day zero.

This is a great path for consoles to take. It leads to the platform staying relevent longer, and the life cycle extending greatly. This will allow the PS5 to be a true generational leap, and bring in a completely new way to develop and play games.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

4TFlop GPU but only a 500Mhz upclock to the CPU? That doesn't sound right. That's not gonna give 60fps to some 30fps some games.

What this does is make those dipping 30fps games a solid 30fps and the 60fps games a solid 60fps.

The sour grapes in here... would make your lips curl up into your mouth so far it would make you think your head had turned into an arse.

I'm not game for a two tiered console generation. This is going to leave a bad bad taste in a good 70% of the 40million customers they already suckered into getting the beta ps4.

I haven't owned a Nintendo console since GameCube, well i have a DS, but Nintendo doesn't consider my demographic a customer, they bailed on my I bailed on them.

Same with Microsoft.

Guess I'll build a new PC and get  Vive for VR.

It doesn't change a thing, this will probably actually provide Sony with a chance to match the nx in power. I don't see an issue with it, games will still run beautifully on the ps4, and thr original ps4 will probably get a price drop giving more people a chance to buy one.

So the NX specs leaked and we are not aware of it?

Why it seems Sony is going with 4.5 now:
VR:  PS4's lack of power has been the negative for Morpheus, especially compared to it's PC kin.  PS4.5 puts Morpheus in much better position re: PC VR.
When you see Morpheus VR demonstrated in stores, it will be demonstrated with PS4.5, showing off it's potential the best with least downsides.

Again another ps4 lack of power statement, ps4 runs the psvr very well I might add. I don't think many of you realize how much the reduced resolution of the PSVR helps the ps4 keep up. 960 per eye and the stereoscopic rendering ability was something baked into the hardware from launch.

A ps4k isn't going to increase the resolution of the PSVR, it would only create two classes of VR users within the ps4 environment,  NEO'S and non Neo's with ZERO of the increased ability going to resolution and all the the extra hardware to push greater fidelity or framerate. I'm spending enough on the PSVR as it is, now to be told I'm going to need a new console too? Huge mistake, and horrible timing with PSVR releasing.

Demonstrating the PSVR in store connected to a ps4k would be a big mistake, because owners then of ps4 might be reluctant to buy thinking their console can't handle it.

So who is going to pay publishers to include that NEO mode, why would they bother.
Required starting in October, yeah right.
Did Giant bomb fall for some faked documents or something.

Why wouldn't they?  Cross platform devs already do equivalent work tweaking for XBone/PC.
PS4.5 sharing same architecture as PS4 means you can rely on same optimizations to large degree.
Just increase resolution to full 1080p.  Full 60 fps.  Enable single player lighting in multiplayer mode.  Etc.
They don't need to bother to find the "ultimate" performance tweak, that "fully" leverages the PS4.5 power,
if they don't want to spend to much on PS4.5 specifics, they just go for the safe/easy performance boosts
Only when PS4/4.5 cross-compatability requirement is dropped will PS4.5 full power/optimization really be pursued.

Console video game development is not a matter of tweaking sliders. Engines are not designed to support this new specification. It's actually a whole pile of extra work, and literally double the QA cost when there is literally zero expectation for increased sales. None.

Video game developers get nothing out of supporting a higher-spec console except lower profits.

btw so they were probably developing "Morpheus" and "Neo" in tandem - I expect several "normals" games (developed to be played on TVs) to have a PS4K exclusive PSVR mode

I got my Neo, and my Morpheus hooked up yo!

:) I kinda like the sound of that so I kinda hope the codenames atleast where real.

There's a difference between required to run on, and actually making use of the extra hardware. All 3DS games are required to run on N3DS and vice versa, almost none use the extra hardware. There is no incentive to make 2 different versions for the same user base. Either the NEO version gets mostly ignored, or the base version will be less optimized, ie run worse. There are not going to be 2 optimized versions for the price of 1.

I highly doubt Sony wants to give up their profits of the golden years (high margin attractively priced slim), piss off developers, and risk dividing the user base, while launching a new product, psvr. Well, maybe they are that stupid. I guess I'll stop trying to pre-order psvr for now, see what NX has to offer instead.

Well the thing, there is no developer stupid enough to ignore the PS4.5 users. Even if it has 1 million users, the developers wouldn't ignore them. And this is just better graphics we are talking about. Why do you guys think it's super hard? You are acting like they're developing on an alien platform. It would not be hard at all to use the extra power because that's all it is, extra power, nothing has changed other than that. You guys seriously need to calm down. You guys are just exaggerating it.

EDIT: I mean holy crap, Sony has found a easy way for developers to develop for 3 different platforms, PS4,PS3,PSV like it's nothing. These are 3 actual different platforms and you think Sony wouldn't make it super easy to develop using PS4.5?

Hey. Console video game developer here. I actually was on a team that ported a game from the PS3 to PSV. Please tell me why the most difficult, tedious times of my video game making career was "nothing". Please tell me how my team of 50+ people putting in 60 hour weeks for months straight just trying to get the game run at more than 5 fps was "nothing". It was damn near impossible. The game was nearly cancelled because we actually reached a point where we thought it might not actually be able to be done. Everything had to be redone, scaled down and simplified to run on the PSV.  3D models, textures, animation rigs, animations, audio, AI, shaders, the entire menu system, controls, you name it, and I'm not even getting into the engine team who banked enough overtime to get 3 months straight off when the game finally shipped.

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

People are making this out to be a big deal because it actually is a big deal. It might look easy on paper to those who have no clue how console video games are made or the tools we have available to us to make them, but for those of use that do this is actually pretty difficult and represents a pile more work.

Need another example? Just look at the clusterfuck that is PC ports coming out of Microsoft's UWP. What about this whole thing makes you think it's "easy".

Hmmm we've got more than 50% marketshare...how should we fuck this up? Don't worry fam i got this, introduce a 4.5 console that causes a massive rift in the community.
