Forums - Sony - Star Ocean 5 censorship of a woman 18 years old due to western pressure.

The real pervs are the ones who complain about it. They're the ones looking for the panties to complain about to begin with

I don't know about the others, but personally I'm interested in seeing the original artistic vision in its full glory (even when there's no glory in the original vision, like in this case).

"Western pressure"

People need to understand that western pressure can't censor SE's games. Only SE can.

Look no further than Poligon, Jim Sterling, Destructurd and kotaku etc etc. They are quite dedicated mouth pieces

Censorship is bad and Square Enix should feel bad for doing it!

That said... it's something you can only see if you angle the camera to look up the girls skirt? If Square had never said they censored it in the first place would anyone even know? Sounds more like they are just trying to get some extra publicity to me...

Fans noticed it and asked SE

Gives me another reason to wait and see on this game rather then my original plan of buying day 1.

It is kind of funny that I have a game called Samurai Warriors 4, and in that game there is character creation. You can literally create a replica of things that are censored in other games. I enjoyed the Bust slider :).

It's an unneeded change that doesn't change anyones actual experience playing the game, as you still see this videogame characters underwear.

But it needlessly covers more skin to help ease the minds of a few people overseas. Where's the creative freedom?

What I read of the situation is it seems that it is more SE wanting a certain rating and making changes based on that decision.

Well the article pretty much explains it all in one sentence. SE wanted to achieve a certain rating for SO5, I assume that was either T for teen or E for everyone, and that meant being more sexually modest than they would have to be if they wanted an M for mature rating.

100% purely commercial decision to achieve a certain rating to maximise audience potential.

Move along people, nothing to see here.

Get with the times old timer.  We can't have that rational, thinking attitude these days.  This is outrage culture man! Get with the program :P

Also, on a side note, given the other chick is wearing nothing but diamond shapes instead of an actual outfit and we haven't seen that changed, I'm not convinced that SE isn't just taking the piss.  And I don't think it's the censors their aiming at with it :P

Well yes, there is the fact that you have an all but naked character prancing around the game. I hadn't remembered that she was as quasi-naked as she is. But it makes undie-gate  look completely ridiculous.

The need for censorship iseems to me completely a perception by Japan devs and / or a desire to appear less pervy to western audiences. So it's all about their own image management, not Western pressure.

It's been going on since Xenoblade X, nothing new here.

What's the real issue?

You still get to see this videogame characters pants. What's the actual problem?

People see it as group with no interest in the game meddling with the game for sociopolitical reasons. People get angry because of the "give an inch, give a mile" rationale. While it's such a minor change, it's dumb that they'd even have to consider Westerners being upset about their T-rated game at all. For any reason.

That's semantics.  Censorship isn't always forced upon an entity.  It can also be a choice.  Self-censoring is a real thing.  Most people do it every day when they are talking to their bosses at work.

I'm not saying this isn't censorship, I'm just saying that it's not "due to western pressure". It's because SE thinks it's a smart thing to do financially.

But the reason why it's being done is to avoid controversy. Changing this type of thing has no positive impact on sales, especially with the scathing commentary SE got from their Japanese fans.

Sexy characters aren't allowed in video games. We all know that.

eh. Frankly this is just more reason for me to learn Japanese. I'd rather have the direct source game than wait for localization anyways. From poor translations to changes made because they might offend the flavor of the month SJW there are plenty of reasons to take that step and buy a Rosetta Stone package.

It's not about not seeing panties or growing breast on computer generated characters, frankly it's about getting as close to the source game as possible.
