An upside of this is that there won't be need of sticking that atrocious NYKO Data Bank onto the PS4.

Even if it's designed for relational databases in mind, would a PS4 really benefit from it, apart from the high-speed capabilities of a SSD?

Yes, and No.

The PS4 doesn't use Sata III, and so never hits the full potential of using a SSD. To be honest, I don't even know if the ps4 would even hit full potential of a 10k RPM mechanical drive. In my opinion, a 7200RPM SSHD is the best option for the current PS4.

The Gen 2 (3 if you consider the 1200 gen 2) PS4 better have SATA III man...

Is that the one that came with battlefront? And if so, you're saying they will have even better performance gains?

i would assume as a whole, no matter what console, an SSD would improve performance in every aspect to at least some degree, as far as anything related to loading goes which includes visual performance gains such as faster texture loading, perhaps an ever so slightly better fps avg, and so on.

SATA II (revision 2.x) interface, formally known as SATA 3Gb/s, is a second generation SATA interface running at 3.0 Gb/s. The bandwidth throughput, which is supported by the interface, is up to 300MB/s.

SATA III (revision 3.x) interface, formally known as SATA 6Gb/s, is a third generation SATA interface running at 6.0Gb/s. The bandwidth throughput, which is supported by the interface, is up to 600MB/s. This interface is backwards compatible with SATA 3 Gb/s interface.

**

A 5400RPM (stock hard drive) doesn't come come to maxing out Sata II, but a SSD is DRASTICALLY throttled by it. To answer your question, a SSD WILL see improved performance yes. But the throughput cap means you are only getting a fraction of the value for the cost.

A 1TB SSD is ~$294.06

A 1TB SSHD is ~$79.83

A 2TB HDD is $91.48

** I personally have the 1TB SSHD that i swapped out 2 months after launch. I saw drastic improvements with just the SSHD -and yes a SSD would have been better, but a 1TB SSD was over $400 at the time.

According to psblog -- you'd think thats an Indie game.

I knew about the game when it released on the wii u but I saw it on the PS plus games for this month. i don't know how someone would think it's an "indie".

Because the indie hate is SOOO strong that any game that person isn't personally familiar with is considered indie.

That seems to be the case for most gamers. Thinking something is an indie just because it's not a halo or uncharted.

It's crazy to assume that ps plus subscribers would get 2 free AAA games every month for 12 months. It's no where near a realistic expectation. Just a few free AAA games by themselves would offset the cost of PS plus. Indies are the icing on the cake in my opinion.

$140, 4TB, 2.5" HDD. However, it is 15mm high, so it won't fit inside a PS4 without some hardware modifications.

What I don't understand is that there were people who already had 4TB to 6TB drives hooked up to their PS4s (using external 3.5" drives) without any issues, so I don't know what this "new" support actually gives you.

What? How? That they could save games on?

Yes.  Here is a link for someone who's modded their PS4, and downloaded games onto the larger drive without issues.

You can also use the Nyko Data Bank, although they say that using drivers larger than 2TB can cause issues with Rest Mode (so maybe this is what this firmware update fixed):

I think I misunderstood. I know the battlefront bundled ps4 was the first revision of the launch ps4, I thought you were implying that this revision had sata 3 support. Which would've been good news on my behalf.

4TB? No 2.5 exists.

Wrong. Granted they are in external enclosures, but they do exist.

Not only do they exist, but they will eventually be released into other channels soon, Sony will then support them out of the gate.
Credit where credit is due to Sony... At least they are being proactive.

Can it play Audio CD's yet?

Howso? I thougt it is a single-laser drive, these cannot focus onto CDRoms.

It's competitor does and the PS4 does play back DVD's. So I just assumed from a hardware perspective nothing was stopping it.
