Forums - Nintendo - NeoGAF verfied user: NX CPU is noticeably better then PS4 and Xbox One CPU

There is a third factor when choosing a CPU: heat. The 8350 is a 125W chip, and you can't mount one of those on a tiny, console box without running into overheating problems.

Oh, and yes, the PS4 beats the X1 because it has a much better GPU.

Let's not talk about power consumption. I know some people don't care about that, but I'm always looking about how much I'm going to spend at home with each console. I have a small wallet :P. This gen it's fine, but previous one was a bit overpriced for my taste. It doesn't seem too much if you game a little, but on the long term is not that bad lol.

OT, I think Nintendo could easily manage to make a PS4-like powerful console, and prized it 300-350 now. I just hope they don't include an expensive controller (as much as I like the Gamepad, it's made the bundle more expensive). Prize is an important factor on people's choice about a console.

well we already knew that PS4 and X1 CPUs aren't that great, so that wouldn't be a surpirse. GPU will be much more interesting.

The Playstation 4 has a performance boost over the Xbox One as it uses GDDR5 RAM, which is a lot faster than the DDR3 RAM in the Xbox One. Because modern games require shifting through a lot of assets stored in RAM, a performance boost there is a major advantage.

Although the Xbox One is clocked slightly higher, both systems dynamically clock themselves upwards when required (just like modern PCs).

But I wasn't talking about the electricity cost, but the amount of heat that the components produce.

The PS4 and X1 use more than 100W while gaming (source: extremetech.com) but that is for the whole device: CPU, GPU, RAM, HDD and optical drive. With the 8350, just the CPU would already generate more heat that a PS4/X1, and you should have to add a similar amount for the rest of the console.

You can't put 200W of hardware into a shoe sized box and expect to run cool without big heatsinks and noisy fans, which no one wants.

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

There better be more to the NX than just "a little better than PS4" specs. That didn't work for the Wii U.

X1>PS4? For real? Well if Xbox One is supposed to have a better CPU than PS4 then does it really mean that much? Good for NX if true though, although considering the time between releases you'd expect that anyway.

Oh and the title should be better than (with an a) and not then (with an e)...

XB1 CPU is like 8-9% faster.

PS4 GPU (graphics unit) is like 35-40% faster.

The graphics unit matters much more than the CPU unit does.

I don't know nothing about anything, but I've heard that the PS4's cpu is poop.

So is the Xbox Ones, and so will the NX's probably be.

Why?

because you want cheap chips.

You dont want big strong fast cpus, that are expensive and make too much heat.

You rather use your chip budget ($ & heat) on a good graphics unit.

Its actually a okay design choice, to focus your chip this way, so its more balanced for gameing.

Which is the main thing most people use consoles for.

PS4/XB1 were developed 4 freaking years ago. Do we give a smartphone maker a trophy for making a better phone today than the iPhone 4?

If Nintendo is bringing something weaker or even par to the market and this is supposed to be a traditional console ... that is embarrassing. They should not even bother to be honest, there better be something else that amazing about the NX or this is going to go the same exact way the Wii U did for them, in which case they'd be better off just going third party on the console side.

I honestly hoped for a much better CPU .

I guess they have gone with a similar configuration than PS4/X1, but using the newer Puma cores instead of the Jaguar that power the other consoles.

Why?

You want balance.

If nintendo make a much more powerfull CPU for their console, unless they also do a much faster GPU, it doesnt make sense.

The purpose of a console is to play video games.

Theres a reason why they design these chips with small cpus + big graphic units.

Its because its the "best" way to allocate your resources (costs ($) and heat).

Its smart design.

The other way about it? big cpu + small graphics unit => really bad video game console performance for its price.

It would be good at doing other not gameing stuff though... but why would you want that?

Big CPU + Big graphics unit?  you want a 599$ nintendo console?

No the smart thing to do is a cpu around the size  PS4 & XB1 went with, and then have the GPU portion around the size theirs is.

Balance is important in chip design.

Otherwise you waste $ for little gain, and run into bottlenecks.

Its nintendo.

The Wii U was the power of the PS3 & XB360.

The NX will be the power of the PS4 & XB1.

They are just a gen behinde in terms of performance.... its their thing.

It wont matter until the Playstation 5 & Xbox Two launch.

It will matter from day 1. No one gets excited for a system that's basically the same thing as something else that launched 3-4 years earlier?

Would you be excited about the smartphone that's as powerful as iPhone 5? Yeah it can run the same apps, but so what?

This strategy only works if you have a groundbreaking, earth shattering, stop everything you have to try this type of other aspect to their hardware like the Wiimote was to the year 2006.

PS4/XB1 is crap hardware by today's standards, even Sony is apparently making something double the PS4 for $400 in PS4K, you will have tablets as powerful as the XB1 at least quite soon.
