Back in the mid 1990s PC Gaming and Console Gaming weren't as in common with each other than they are today. More complicated game genres like RTS, FPS and Simulators tended to be on PC, while arcade style game genres like Platformers, Puzzle, and Sports were on Console. In addition console gaming was considered to be "for kids" and PC gaming "for adults".
The Original Xbox was the system that changed all that. If you have a look at the gaming landscape before and after the Xbox you'll see before there were very few ports of PC games to consoles. After Xbox, games released on PC and Consoles simultaneously. Part of the reason was that the Xbox had a lot in common with the PC so porting games were easy, and the other reason was that young adults started playing on consoles as well, especially with games like Halo 2.
SEGA released a bunch of their Saturn games on PC and I still have them on my shelf. From a gameplay and graphical point of view they play and look almost exactly the same, but are less fun in general because in the 1990s game controllers for PC were absolutely dire, limited to 4 face buttons and a D-Pad or Joystick, with next to no emphasis on ergonomics. Not like today when you can connect an Xbox 360 controller to a PC (which is what I do) and have an identical gaming experience.
