The PC and console markets are very different today and mostly cater to different gamers. But it was even more of the case back then. Mostly because consoles for the most part couldn't play a lot of the genres PC's could handle.
As for "backlash", there were a lot less console warriors back then and no Internets for them to come to so they could bitch about stupid things.
