I guess I'm the only one who looks back at 64 and scratches his head as to why it is said to have aged beautifully and is sometimes called the best Mario. It's controls were good but not great, it has a less distinct identity than any 3d Mario except 3D Land and honestly less interesting level design. 3D World constantly brings in new ideas and tricks while not sacrificing on the fun of powerups like previous 3D games foolishly and bafflingly did (not saying the powerups are bad (well, in 64 they are pretty lame) but the situational air of them and the fact you can't take them with you past arbitrarily predetermined points lessens them) and has plenty of personality. 64 was a great game for its time and it's still a good game now. However it definitely eased Mario into the third dimension with a very safe approach aesthetically, narratively, and even in terms of level complexity. |
Mario 64 was about as complex as 3D level design got at the time. The technology available then simply didn't allow for much more. Personally, I think they worked very cleverly within the constraints of the hardware to deliver worlds that seemed grand in scope and had something interesting around almost every corner. The way they were structured so that they never seemed convoluted or confusing yet still gave room for exploration and discovery, was remarkably elegant.
It's too short. Galaxy games are more epic and last longer.

Still way better than NSMBWii and NSMBU. |
Lol no. NSMB2 relied on coins only- horrible idea.
Super Mario bros wii was only the second game in the series, so i didn't mind much(it's co-op was hilariously fun). As for the Wii U version, same thing.
I just don't want to see a NSMBNX tbh. Super Mario Sunshine was always the better option for a remake, and Nintendo can do much better than the cheaply made NSMB series

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

Oh for the time it was pretty astounding. But then so was Pong :P
Within the constraints of the system, 64 was an amazing Platformer in its time. But if we're talking point to point regardless of release time, every 3D Mario since then just about (as in, except 3D Land :P) has improved over it in numerous if not every way. And I'll stand by the identity and personality bit cause Super Mario 64 is literally just standard Mario made 3D as far as aesthetics and tone.

I actually disagree, even ignoring when they were made, I find 64's worlds significantly more interesting than 3D World's or Sunshine's. There are more unique features, more cool things to discover, and more variety.

See I actually feel variety is the least of 3D World's problems. It brings plenty of experimental levels and challenging obstacles. For me it's the length of the game and the size of the levels I find annoying at times. But feel free to disagree with me here. I mean, I have a similar feeling playing Ocarina of Time for the first time now on 3DS. But then maybe that's the trick: most of my experiences with OoT and SM64 came after playing other games and I never played them as much as others when they released. Although I feel with OoT (even more so than with SM64) I could objectively defend my position :P

The short levels and the time limit are both issues in my view, but I did also feel that the levels were a bit too simple at times. It felt like in order to accomodate four players they had to avoid the whackier level designs that made the Galaxy games or 64 so memorable.
People ignore 3d land did it first (amd better)
