This is obviously a joke thread.

Sony ain't bad at it either. OT: Uncharted 4 will likely sell great. But that fact is Sony is developing less 1st party games because many have failed, primarily last gen. Their output this gen has been small. |
A game that doen't meet sales expectation doesn't seem - per se - a valid reason to close down a 1st party studio. After all a game studio is an asset, even if a game flops it doesn't mean the next one will too.
I don't want to sound cynical but I believe Sony has shut down studios only because they don't need them.
The Ps3 was the (Sony) console with most 1st party output because they needed to differentiate themselves from MS and to re-establish their position as market leaders. Now that their leadership is not endagered and they're also getting some 3rd party exclusivity again (like in the Ps1/Ps2 era), some 1st party studios are just redundant.
Why should they shut down all their studios? Evolution studios was cut in half a long time a go and focused on making DLC and patches. They were destined to be closed down by Sony at this point, especially since they already have GT Sports coming up. It never made sense for them to have 2 Racing Sim games in the first place.
Sonys First party Studios are all profitable in the end of the day, because as a console manufacture they dont have to pay console royalties which means their first party games actually make more money than EA or Activision games.
A copy of Gravity Rush makes Sony 30€, While EA gets 52€ for their newest AAA game like the upcoming Mirrors Edge. And a copy of Uncharted 4 will make them full 60€.

That depends on what you mean by 1st party games. If you mean games developped by a Sony owned studios, then, no, their output is about the same. However Sony have had fewer collaborations with third parties working on Sony owned IP, and those games can also be considered first party (ie. Ratchet & Clank). Insomniac developped 9 entries within Sony owned IPs during the PS3 era (6 R&C, 3 Resistance), whereas this gen, they might only develop 2 (Ratchet & Clank that's releasing in a few days, and another entry in R&C I think could be pretty likely).
So the output of their first party studios is about the same. The total output of first party games may not be.

Sales are modest, but then I imagine the yearly cost of development is too. Once you have the foundations of a yearly sports franchise down, then you can see a decent profit each year without much effort, especially when you have no competetion. |
But its a game developed for three platforms, has a marketing pushing, licensing fees, etc.
I presume 2K stopped making baseball games because sales expectations were too low. I mean NBA 2K15 on PS3 alone sold at par with The Show 15 on PS3 and PS4 combined. Hence, continuing that series could just be fan service.

Lets also conviniently leave Bloodborne and Until Dawn out your list because they dont serve you insane agenda. |
Bloodborne and Until Dawn are not 1st party games, sorry to be the one that told you.... :/

Maybe the studios they don't need are the same as studios not making notable games. Driveclub apparently sold well since Sony boasted it sold 2 million, but I guess not well enough.
Some of the 3rd party exclusivity is bought. Some Japanese games are going exclusive for obvious reasons and we saw that last gen.
However, the 3rd party exclusivity we see happening is not like the 5th and 6th gens. The X1 is a relevant platform and will continue getting the major 3rd party games.

But this is why I argue there is less reliance on 1st party studios these days. Great exclusives can come from 3rd parties.

Yes, I agree. They would never close down a key studio like Naughty Dog or Poliphony.
Of course I don't think the Xbox is irrilevant, but it's just not a great threat for Sony like in the past.
