this is like the most petty thing i have seen a developer do.

Agreed. I can understand not releasing a game because of hardware not being strong enough to play it, but not this. It comes across as childish to me.

one thing tho that i dont agree with is people shouldnt be going around harassing her or making threats towards her either

wish people would stoop to that level

Nice virtue signalling and narrative building from Brandon there.

It's always about 'group X' not liking someone instead of people taking responsibility for their own actions - you know, like Alison Rapp having a side business of selling risque pictures of herself, allegedly under an anonymous name despite teasing some pictures on her personal Twitter account and sharing pictures with envelopes from the photoshoot clearly marked "A. Rapp", some of which featured her holding Nintendo products. Perhaps people with involvement in GamerGate did indeed harass her and intend to get her fired - I haven't seen evidence yet, and I strong disagree with blindly believing alleged victims without seeing evidence, but then again I don't follow GG and haven't done much research into that side of this story yet - but you yourself cannot just keep blaming others when you've done things that would get most people fired.

At least the meltdown on Twitter and all the people -- especially the various editors, writers and producers for outlets like Ars Technica, GameSpot, Game Informer, IGN and Polygon -- immediately jumping in to virtually hug Rapp has been hilarious, and a little disturbing, to comb through. I particularly love Rapp's claim that the industry is full of folks that refuse to embrace "diversity of thought" whilst she's simulatenously blocking pretty much everyone on Twitter that even questions her. On a larger scale, why is that "diversity" only means a specific kind of diversity? Why do you never see left-leaning feminists calling for more conservative or classically liberal opinions? Why not more praise for the different schools of thought within feminism like individualist feminism?

So we don't know why she was fired, but since people harassed her online,GG is to blame?Yeah seems legit, since you know only pro-GG people harass other people and anti-GG people are total saints

Being a child of the 80's and a teenager of the 90's I feel the term "online harassment" is a bit of a joke. People bugging you on twitter? Block them. People bugging you on facebook? Block them. People emailing you hate? Get a new email address and keep it private.

I feel like those who complain about being harassed online are... for lack of a better word, weak. It's one thing to be harassed in the real world. It's an entirely other thing to be harassed online where you can simply "turn off" or "block" said harassment.

hell i was born in 97 and this is basically how i feel about online harrassment like if suddenly someone replies to me that i am a terrible person that deseverses to die i honestly won't care with the main thing being that just argueing with that will waste my time (or even blocking them) and  it will give them attention which is what they want so its best to ignore them and they will go away because you made them feel bored and didn't give them what they wanted.

also if you have like hundreds if not thousands of people attacking you on twitter you probably said something so dumb or so awful that kind of deserve all of the shit talked about you.

It kinda feels like the article left some stuff out.....it's Kotaku, so why wouldn't they. I would like to know the specifics of this.
Sure, if she was fired for her views on Childporn & pedophilia, then I can understand why Nintendo did it. I don't think Nintendo would have wanted to have a childporn defending image to them.

She was fired for moonlighting, not her views on CP/Pedophilia.   Nintendo hasn't elaborated as to why her moonlighting conflicted w/ her job at Nintendo, so there's no real word beyond their official statement.

Really? Well that does change the story.

If she was fired over "moonlighting", then she must have had a job where she could have given out information of Nintendo projects. I don’t think they would have fired her over having a second job at McDonalds or something like that.

Do you believe that going after users of drugs will solve the drug problem?

She's making the same argument regarding child porn that is made routinely regarding the drug trade - don't punish the users, punish the suppliers (specifically, the suppliers that peddle actual child porn, not just drawings). If the goal is to end the sexual abuse of children, then punishing the users, including those who satiate their urges using drawings or computer-generated images, is actually going to make things worse - it drives the practice further underground, and makes it harder to prosecute those who are doing the harm.

Hence why she refers to "depictions of sexualised minors" as being something that should have "less strict" laws applied.

The 54 year old man who was arrested for having the child porn didn't abuse any children. But by arresting him, they make it almost guaranteed that they won't find those who are responsible for the abuse. And THAT is the true problem with the situation.

(EDIT: To put her attitude another way - she's not advocating for child pornography, she's advocating for laws to be re-done to protect children from abuse, rather than to demonise those that do nothing more than look at the stuff)

----

Meanwhile, Nintendo has made clear that she wasn't fired over this at all. Their statement rings true, to me, considering her comments on twitter since then. She admits to having done what Nintendo said she did. She admits to having been asked not to comment publicly on rape culture while working there because people associate her with Nintendo and they didn't want to deal with something that had nothing to do with their business. And having now lost her job, she's accusing Nintendo of all sorts of things, etc, for the fact that they didn't want her using her notoriety as a Nintendo employee to talk about other topics.

I have no problems with defending her from people who attack her reasonable comments regarding child porn laws, and I'm very happy to denounce the behaviour of those connected to "gamergate" for their bullying and hypocrisy... but I think Nintendo made the right call, here, based on her behaviour now.

Sorry that's BS mate, child abuse is far more severe than drug use go look at the impact it has on victims for the rest of their lives, any suggestion to lighten laws on punishment is advocating pedophilia end of as children must never suffer such horrific events. This is predatory behaviour that needs to be stamped out so yes the possession of such content should be treated in the same manner, both those creating the content and those creating demand for it should be equally punished.

If she had a child who got abused and someone took pleasure watching the abuse I wonder if she'd even carry such a view.

Why wouldnt Nintendo just set the record strait?

"It wasnt her fault the localisations had censorship or content altered"

The end.
They just watched her burn instead.
