Forums - Nintendo - Does Nintendo require VR/AR to remain relevant...?

Seems to be selling well if preorders are anything to go by - if Nintendo wait until PSVR is released and they sit back for a year without doing anything, they'd lose precious time.

Plus, what do you think Nintendo should do with its next console?

Well preorders aren't anything to go by.  Preorders selling out is nice, but that only has meaning if we know the allocation.  Also, niche products may have high preorders but relatively low sales afterwards, like with JRPG games often do.

As for what Nintendo should do... I dunno.  I agree with you that there needs to be a selling point beyond power, but VR is not it.  VR seems like a niche product to me.  It's fine for what it is, but it's years before it's going to be a mainstream thing if it ever gets there.  It's especially a poor fit for Nintendo's audience.  Nintendo excels in local multiplayer, which VR isn't great for as of now, and kids, whose parents wouldn't want them wearing a TV screen on their eyes.  Aside from this, it doesn't really gel with Nintendo's software.  Some games, Mario Kart, Zelda, Metroid could be fun with VR, but VR won't add much to things like Mario Bros or any of Nintendo's casual leaning stuff.

I still think Nintendo's best chance for success is evolving the Wii concept (which the Wii U didn't really do).

An issue is that Nintendo's audience seems to be dwindling as shown by the Wii U sales, so it's going to have to expand on that audience somehow, plus reviews have said VR is actually quite effective for casual games such as Lucky's Tale.

However I think evolving the Wii concept may be a good route because if VR does turn out to be a big thing, they'll have a well developed motion controller for it which currently is a large part of the VR experience. If VR doesn't turn out to be a big thing, they haven't wasted any money.

AR and VR are red hot right now? News to me.
Which VR sets are selling by the millions?

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

No. They are already relevant and will continue to stay relevant with how things have been going lately.

The sales of the Wii U beg to differ - it's one of the slowest selling consoles in recent memory and has been outsold by both the PS4 (over 3x) and Xbox One (almost x2), even though it had a year headstart.

No because neither have proven to be worth a damn yet. After a few years, if they deliver then yes. But right now, not at all.

If you wait a few years, you may lose a massive slice of the market to competition as other products will prove it's popular, rather than being the product that makes it popular.

Big whoops they fucked up while their handheld business stays afloat and the wii u and 3ds software is really impressive attach rate. Also the NX is righjt alonmg the corner. Ther mobile business if flourishing and amiibos are still selling while nintendo has a amusement park, and movies in plan for us in the future. The dont need vr ro ar.

To awnser the OP:

'What do you think Nintendo's tactic should be for its next console? '

Nintendo shouldn't try to beat Sony at thier own game, in terms of technology the console should be competent but not cutting-edge. At the same time, they shouldn't try to reinvent gaming with exotic peripherals either. What they should do (imo) is to make an accessible console that is designed to be compelling as a 2nd console for gamers; something that can give some advantages to players when paired up to other gaming devices (like PCs, Tablet, Smartphones and even competitor's consoles). Some may argue the Wii and WiiU were already used as 2nd consoles by many, but that was a de-facto situation (since Nintendo doesn't have 3rd party support) - the truth is none of those consoles were designed with that purpose in mind.

We'll see. Provided NX is powerful enough, it wouldn't be all that terribly difficult to add a VR accessorie.

This..

And its a fair qustion.. I think yes..

We expect Nintendo to do some better than PSVR/OR... Somehow better experinces.. tracking.. way the games run.. more fun.. In some new "mega addicted way".. Everything beside that.. And it would be a  disappoint..

Mayby we see at E3..

Most likely not, but we don't even know if VR will be a success yet..

Because?

Because a few thousand pre sales prove nothing. Remember Titanfall?

VR still has to prove everyone that is more than a fad or a gimmick. Maybe we're not ready for it until the tech is cheaper and more advanced.

VR isn't going to be relavant to the average consumer before it's at least $250 without caveats, so no.

No, I still belive VR is going to be a gimmick that will become irrelevant after a few years.

This is what i dont understand, why are "controller innovation" & "powerful hardware" the only two other options?

Okay, what are the other options?

Well personally i think the direction they are headed now seems like a good fit for them.

They have heavily hinted that they plan to unify their handheld & console. Basically seperate devices with the same/similar hardware available in different form factors that share a unified software library. A common problem for Nintendo is software droughts and this strategy helps solve that problem. It also allows for Nintendo to diversify their library by no longer needing to release 2 seperate entries of many franchises.

In addition to that they are expanding into other things like figurines/cards, mobile apps, theme park attractions, movies/series. The combination of these things have the potential to increase brand awareness which may in turn increase interest in their dedicated gaming hardware/software.
