Forums - Sony - G4TV gives Crisis Core a 4 !

>No one seems to be making any criticisms of his actual review, where he gave reasons for this score.

That would be equivalent of him giving SSBB a 3/5 by repeating "SSBB has no Online leader board" over and over again in his entire review.

Is that a criticism of his actual review? Well, no, but it doesn't make it fair.

That's all I'm saying, and since we all agree, that'd be that.

Let them burn.... I hope this score doesnt count on gamerankings, one stupid making a game look worst than it is.

I haven't played Crisis Core so I'm not going to make any comments directly related to it but ...

There are (pretty much) two factors that really matter in an RPG (in particular a Japaneese RPG), the Story and the combat system; if the story is full of cliches, the dialogue is bad, the battles are repetative and the combat is too easy this means that an RPG game is not a good RPG.

If the quality of dialogue and gameplay is subjective, blaydcor, then I'd insist that everything is subjective (which is true) and that therefore all reviews are simply one guys opinion and don't really matter much anyway. That's certainly a valid position to take -- I just want you to be aware of what that position means.

But I do agree with the rest of your point here, Blayd. Again, it seems like most people seem to agree, to greater or lesser extents, that the faults X-Play notices are genuine faults. Kingofwale, above me, seems to admit that the game does have faults and that it may even deserve a 70% (implicit in his statement that the game may not "deserve a 5.... or even a 4."

The argument, instead, seems to just be that the flaws aren't THAT bad. I'm not saying they're wrong, but it's a fruitless argument. It's like arguing about whether the F word is a REALLY bad word, or just a bad word -- there isn't really a correct answer. So let's just drop this, guys? We seem to agree on most of the fundamentals, and are arguing a difference of degree, not of kind. I'm dropping it, and I hope others will, too.

Amusingly enough, I've noticed that although you and I have probably typed more lengthy thought out arguments in this thread than anybody else (save maybe king of wale), neither of us have really debated about the game's merit, just the credibilty of the reviewer.

I won't ruin the game by telling you the plot, so I will just say.

Story full of cliches? No, not that I can tell, the story is actually pretty well written (of course, I didn't play FFVII so it keeps on surprising me)

Bad dialogue? Yes, I was the first to point that out on March 21th.

Battle repetitive? Absolutely not, you can give away from button mashing in first 2 levels, just like you can get away with just random drawing on first 2 levels of NG on DS, but other than that, you HAVE to fusion, you HAVE to use magic and you have to use your brain.

Bad Combat system?: I love the combat system, it keeps you on your toe whenever you go.

Honestly, a lot of his criticisms are related to experience ...

Someone who has played every Final Fantasy game , has read the "classic" fantasy books, and has a decent knowlege of various folk tales and myths will see any new Final Fantasy game as a paint-by numbers cliche filled story; if they've played several RPGs with similar battle systems it is possible that Crisis Core will be seen as having the most repetative (and dull) of them all.

On the other hand, if you take a 16 year old kid who hasn't played any Final Fantasy that hasn't been released on the PS2 or PSP, hasn't read much fantasy, and has very little knowlege of folk-tales and myths they will probably see a new Final Fantasy story as a fresh experience; at the same time, if this is their first RPG with a battle system like this they will see it as an amazingly fresh and challengine experience.

Which view is correct?

Well, that's the point, Crisis Core has a completely different combat system that any out there, it feels completely new and 'never seen' before.

Frankly, I never played FFVII, so I can't say I would rate the game higher because of their characters, the storyline to me is quite interesting (albit pretty cheesy).

How many people does X-Play ge to review games? I know on the show it's usually only Morgan and Adam, and they can't possibly enjoy every genre. I find the review useless because there is a clear bias against Japanese gaming.

In fact, X-Play had a segment about a month ago on how un-original Japanese games are now. They included Devil May Cry 4 in their example, apparently forgetting it's the 4th game in the series but added a completely different playable character. Anyway, X-Play has little validty to me anymore. I'd also cite the games others have: MLB 2K vs The Show. Oh well.

Also, I am catching up with AotS and X-Play on my DVR right now, and they just reviewed House of the Dead...2 and 3...it scored higher than Crisis Core. I guess that "original" gameplay and great dialogue really carried the games that are 20 minutes long...

Awesome...they reference the "nostalgia" factor! Hah! I can't want to watch the CC review. There's certainly no nostalgia there...
