Forums - Sony - Kotaku - Sources: Sony Is Working On A ‘PS4.5’

I look forward to seeing PS4.5 exclusive games and watch Sony spit in the face of every PS4 owner. Greatness Awaits... on PS4.5.

"the future is here".

The technology has been evolving over the past few decades pretty quickly, it makes sense that console generations are eventually going to become a thing of the past, where instead of waiting nearly a decade, you upgrade within less time. The only issues I'm seeing with this are price points and how the hell would they manage to make a console that can play at 4k 60fps 100% all the way while being insanely cheap, because at the moment 4k on PC is a thing and it's getting cheaper with time, by the time PS4.5 comes out, 4K on PC will be cheaper and better with performance. The other part to note is exclusive being carried from console to console rather than dying with the previous system or being held onto a new system while still supporting the previous one, MS is already doing that with Windows 10 to 7/8 users and it's rather irksome.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Console generations are basically going to end. I've said it many times before. MS is already pursuing this and so is Sony, Nintendo also has patents for upgradable consoles.

The business is changing, you guys will need to get used to it.

I agree for the most part. The only fork in the road is Nintendo. True, Nintendo might have patents for upgradable consoles and I would welcome it. But they are still dead set on making new experiences which more than likely require new hardware components. For PS and XB, upgradable consoles will basically be PCs with proprietary controllers, which I wouldn't mind as long as there are exclusives. I wonder what the future holds for consoles vs. PC. I feel that eventually they'll hit a stalemate in terms of graphical and performance capability.

There are 2 types of upgradable consoles that could be made:

1: DIY Hardware Upgradable

An upgradable console would be interesting, however it would have to be developed first for dummies. Most likely, the majority of people who own consoles don't know how to build a computer. A console is still a computer. If an upgradable console is made, it have to be fool proof.

2: Prebuilt Upgradable

I think this is more like the PS 4.5. This would be the more appealing choice. It'd be basically the same build with better specs. I think this is stable and would be a much better way to approach a console generation. But as you said, it'd be the end of generations which I think is a good idea. However, as I said, NIntendo usually requires new hardware for each console. Unless they break that mentality soon, they'll be doing it the old fashioned way for a while.

Sounds like something I could believe, considering Sony's interest in VR. At the same time, sounds like a great way to anger your existing customers unless an upgrade option is provided, which should be pretty hard. At best, it could be done as a service, but I don't think there's any way it could happen as a simple component you buy and then plug in yourself.

Isn't the RAM inside the GPU?

Ah. You've already been corrected, but let me educate you a bit more! In traditional computers, you usually have two kinds of RAM: for the system, and for the GPU. The RAM meant for the system isn't usually built into the system, it's a separate component instead, just like the CPU, HDD, optical drive, graphics card etc. The RAM meant for the GPU is integrated into the graphics card but it isn't inside the GPU. In PS4's case, the CPU and the GPU share the same RAM, like someone already mentioned.

Ha I should know tbh, I upgraded my 4GB of RAM to 16GB to run UE4 (8 required I think). And yeah, I thought video RAM was inside the GPU itself but hey learn something everyday.

Yeah that's the route I'd like to see if Sony and MS go down the upgradeable hardware route.

I think the days of the traditional console cycle are coming to an end.Tech moves far too fast nowadays and the old model is starting to look like a dinosaur.

Yup. The industry has changed too, today it's mostly adults who have far greater disposable income. It isn't the same business it was in the 80s/90s or even 2000s.

And its completely optional. I'm sure EA and Activision aren't worried about purchasing some extra dev kits, if they do not want to utilise the added power they don't have to (just like the 3DS and DSi). This is no different from the PC environment except its easier in that their is a given base to work from (OG PS4) and they can just test higher bench marks on the PS4k. I really don't think we should speak on what developers actually want unless you work for a AAA studio?

I have actually.

Fair enough, its a very necessary question

Bad.

bet: lost

Guys it's kotaku, I mean kotaku, we can talk and speculate about this when the source is believable.

Makes sense. Nintendo must really be scaring Sony and MS. MS was rumored to be doing this soon too, correct? Just think if Nintendo again releases a console (NX) that matches or surpasses the PS4 and XB1 and then a year later we get new consoles from them that blows it out of the water? Nintendo would be in the same situation they are in now. It could really damage them badly.

lol As soon as saw "4k", instant bs. That model would be so much more expensive.
