I would be so pissed if this happened tbh unless they offered to upgrate my ps4 for like max 50 dollars and I wouldn't have to do it myself.

It's the same reason why I don't buy the latest smarthphone but at least I know there will be new and better hardware in 6 months or so with a cellphone. I expect my PS console to not be arguably obsolete for at least 3-4 years after I but it for the original price.

50 dollars .... lol .... yeah right. The only thing you'll get for 50 bucks is maybe a HDD upgrade.

lol I know that won't happen that's why I would be 100% pissed off if this is actually true.

Pretty sure a PS4 controller cost more then that. The Value of a 4k upgrade is worth a lot, just not the price of a whole new system, but if you value it as little as $50 you really shouldn't care either way lol

Because developers will likely have to pay for new and improve dev kits that run at this higher spec. Because developers will now literally have to do twice the testing. Because developers will have to make enhancements to the game to run at both specs.

It's more time, effort, and expense for developers to have to handle this. It's the main reason why there is only one game that is New 3DS exclusive, and that games was made by Nintendo themselves.

And its completely optional. I'm sure EA and Activision aren't worried about purchasing some extra dev kits, if they do not want to utilise the added power they don't have to (just like the 3DS and DSi). This is no different from the PC environment except its easier in that their is a given base to work from (OG PS4) and they can just test higher bench marks on the PS4k. I really don't think we should speak on what developers actually want unless you work for a AAA studio?

I have actually.

I’ve been looking at upgrading my PC to run 4k at 30 frames with everything on. I was looking at least $750 - $1000 GPU, that’s not including CPU, Tower, Power Supply, Ram upgrade, and Motherboard. I will be curious to know what price this PS4.5 will cost. I can’t see them making the same mistake like they did with the PS3 and launch at a horrifying $899 and even then, to run 4k at good settings you’re looking well over $1k.

Resolution has gotten way out of hand this generation. There are much better visuals improvements that they can be focusing on instead of wasting so much processing power on 4k. Did anyone care that GT6 on PS3 run at 1440p? I know I didn’t, and even most of my PC games don’t run at 1440p. I rather invest my processing power on things like Vsync.
I would feel sorry for those who have spent over $800 on a PS4 and PSVR products, only to know that a PS4.5 released.

If it's actually a bump to 4K, it's $300 minimum most likely.

So $1000 roughly would get you the "full" PS4 rig, PS4K + VR.

Verry stupid idea!
Not.going to spend another 400 4years after the ps4

Personally I think the damage is done and the PS4 is good enough the way it is for this gen, and that this can wait for PS5.

...but if they do make a PS4.5...i'm likely going to buy one anyways lol

Sounds like something I could believe, considering Sony's interest in VR. At the same time, sounds like a great way to anger your existing customers unless an upgrade option is provided, which should be pretty hard. At best, it could be done as a service, but I don't think there's any way it could happen as a simple component you buy and then plug in yourself.

It's also strange that this only mentions an upgraded GPU. You'd need more than just a GPU upgrade to hit 4K, PS4 CPU is kind of on the weak side. Pretty sure you'd need at least 4 more GB of RAM as well.

Isn't the RAM inside the GPU?

Ah. You've already been corrected, but let me educate you a bit more! In traditional computers, you usually have two kinds of RAM: for the system, and for the GPU. The RAM meant for the system isn't usually built into the system, it's a separate component instead, just like the CPU, HDD, optical drive, graphics card etc. The RAM meant for the GPU is integrated into the graphics card but it isn't inside the GPU. In PS4's case, the CPU and the GPU share the same RAM, like someone already mentioned.

I think the days of the traditional console cycle are coming to an end.Tech moves far too fast nowadays and the old model is starting to look like a dinosaur.
