Sounds like something I could believe, considering Sony's interest in VR. At the same time, sounds like a great way to anger your existing customers unless an upgrade option is provided, which should be pretty hard. At best, it could be done as a service, but I don't think there's any way it could happen as a simple component you buy and then plug in yourself.

It's also strange that this only mentions an upgraded GPU. You'd need more than just a GPU upgrade to hit 4K, PS4 CPU is kind of on the weak side. Pretty sure you'd need at least 4 more GB of RAM as well.

Isn't the RAM inside the GPU?

Ah. You've already been corrected, but let me educate you a bit more! In traditional computers, you usually have two kinds of RAM: for the system, and for the GPU. The RAM meant for the system isn't usually built into the system, it's a separate component instead, just like the CPU, HDD, optical drive, graphics card etc. The RAM meant for the GPU is integrated into the graphics card but it isn't inside the GPU. In PS4's case, the CPU and the GPU share the same RAM, like someone already mentioned.
