Don't ruin a good thing, Sony!!

Why would they piss off developers?
I don't think having an optional, far more power SKU of the same/similar architecture will be much work on their behalf. Especially if resolution is the main use of that added power.

Why would they do that? They are silling PS4 like crazy, and they are miles ahead of the competition. Why would they risk alienating their consumers and dividing their userbase for a slightly more powerful machine?

This would be at minimum $200 I would have to think as an "add-on" (not sure if that would even be possible). The jump to 4K is huge, the system would have to be made several times more powerful.

There are now rumors/speculation of Sony, Microsoft & Nintendo all allowing upgradable hardware. Do you think it would be dumb if all 3 go this route? |
Yes. 100% yes.
It increases developer costs, confuses potential customers, and spits in the face of existing ones. Not to mention how Sony would completely mess their profit margin on the PS4 by developing it, deploying the changes to developers, developing new dev kits, and retooling factories to produce two fundamentally different versions of the same consoles instead of one.
It's no-win for pretty much everyone involved.
I look forward to seeing PS4.5 exclusive games and watch Sony spit in the face of every PS4 owner. Greatness Awaits... on PS4.5.
Okay, so right off the bat I just want to say that 4k is 4 times the pixels of 1080p, not twice as many.
Anyways, 4k gaming would take a huge boost in power if you wanted to even maintain the same level of asset quality we are already seeing on the PS4. I think a slight bump in power (allowing for stable 1080p @ 60 fps for all games) with 4k video support is more likely.
Edit: I should also point out that in my humble opinion, there is no fucking way.
Bet with Adamblaziken:
I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Because developers will likely have to pay for new and improve dev kits that run at this higher spec. Because developers will now literally have to do twice the testing. Because developers will have to make enhancements to the game to run at both specs.
It's more time, effort, and expense for developers to have to handle this. It's the main reason why there is only one game that is New 3DS exclusive, and that games was made by Nintendo themselves.
