No interest in picking up Hunter X Hunter. I know people love it but I hate getting into something that stops and starts.

Eh, that might be for the best. It frustrates me honestly, trying to keep my interest up when it I only get a few chapters a year. It's the same reason I tend to lose interest in monthly manga that haven't finished.

That being said, if you change your mind, I actually recommend the 2011 anime over the manga. The mangaka refuses to work with assistants for whatever reason, which is admirable I guess...but the end result isn't so much. The art style looks extremely rough, almost like notebook doodles at times. I read the manga out of necessity, since I love the story, but I'd say the anime is a far better medium for it in this case. I found the anime had a decent closure too, even if it hinted at the story continuing.

I might try the anime, then.  I much prefer complete manga, as well.  I always fall behind with on-going manga, which is fine, but then I fall too far behind and lose my place.  Turns into a hassle so I just start reading something else.

Wow, didn't realize anyone big time worked without assistants.  Those that use them make them sound like a huge help, even if it's just with backgrounds and tones.  I've seen quite a few manga that started out rough but improved a lot over time, a lot of which is probably down to hiring good assistants.  Early Skip Beat, for instance, is half scribble with no background detail.

Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun turned out to be a good introduction to making manga.  It's also pretty funny.

Cory in the house for me is the best manga ever made in the human history.

Relax guys is my opinion

Jump updates usually come out the same day, so it's easier for me to read all of them at once, but sporadic releases I almost always fall behind on. Recently, that's happened to me with Magi and Attack on Titan. I tell myself I'll catch up at some point...but we'll see if I stick with that plan. The longer I put it off, the less likely I'll read it again. I suppose it only takes a few hours to catch up on some of these monthly series...but eh...

Without assistants, it seems like that background takes the biggest hit. I notice this with some authors' debut stuff, where the characters look mostly fine, but they seem to be standing on a giant plane of nothingness. Which gets kind of annoying, since the background can make or break my immersion.

I can't think of anyone as popular as Togashi refusing assistants. Oda has a nice system in One Piece though, where he demands that he draw all the characters alone, but lets his assistants take care of backgrounds. So the end result is that the characters will always look consistent, but the scene won't feel empty either.

Anyways, here's a handy chart i found for anyone that wants to see what weekly HxH fans get to enjoy.

It kinda amazes me that the Chimera Ant arc lasted from 2004 to 2011. It would be absolutely painful to start reading in the middle of that. And to think how many manga have started and finished while Togashi while was writing one single story arc. Crazy.

And that 2015...

And to be fair the Chimera Ant arc was absolutely painful - no matter what.

Eh? I don't know if the manga was any different, but the anime arc was one my most memorable anime experiences ever. The writing just blew me away. The development of the villains was fantastic, and Gon's tragedy broke me. The most powerful part was definitely the political subtext after the Mini Rose Bomb denotated. It was pretty shocking the way the story shifted so show how even the worst monsters in nature are nothing compared to the evil of humanity. It was like...I was plucked from the manga universe without me knowing, only to suddenly realize I'm seeing my own world. I've never felt anything like it, honestly.

I suppose everyone has their preferences...but man...you and I are quite different it seems.

No, the Manga is the same. I absolutely love the Chimera Ant Arc as well, just a masterpiece in every regard really. Gon's development and Meruem's character were amazing. The side characters were huge as well in their development and the way the world paralleled ours was something special. Honestly can't say anything bad about the arc personally and I never saw the anime version (just the fights, oh and a few random epidoses).

Do we know how many chapters are still left?
The last manga had a sentence about it, but I dunno if it was during the translation or supposed to be like that, but the actual number wasn't there, there was just a void with a black shadow of something that looking at best like a 7.

Nope, I'd say it still needs double digit chapters to finish well though. If not it's gonna feel rushed.

I was just amazed as how much it copied the cell saga.

When it got to the point where the director sacrified himself to "kill" the big bad guy, only for the bad guy to come right back I was just done with it. I mean I kept watching but at that point I jjust stopped caring.

That...honestly never crossed my mind...and I still can't really see it. Other than appearance, the main villains had almost nothing in common. Cell was another overconfident villain whose greatest character development was increasing his power level yet again. Mereum was a conquest-focused monster who grew more and more human as he became close to Komugi. The rest of the villains had similar stories...I can't think of anything in Dragonball that has even come close in terms of character development.

Hero self-sacrifice is hardly unique to these two manga. I mean...I honestly can't think of anything else these two arcs shared other than that and the villains' appearance. What other similarities are you seeing?

The text was obscured intentionally...so it could be a double digit number. Considering how this 'final' arc has been going on for like four years now, I wouldn't be surprised if Kubo stretches this out another year.

Does it bother anyone else when a manga you're reading finally gets a full color panel and their hair color is way different than you've been imagining?
