And to be fair the Chimera Ant arc was absolutely painful - no matter what.

Eh? I don't know if the manga was any different, but the anime arc was one my most memorable anime experiences ever. The writing just blew me away. The development of the villains was fantastic, and Gon's tragedy broke me. The most powerful part was definitely the political subtext after the Mini Rose Bomb denotated. It was pretty shocking the way the story shifted so show how even the worst monsters in nature are nothing compared to the evil of humanity. It was like...I was plucked from the manga universe without me knowing, only to suddenly realize I'm seeing my own world. I've never felt anything like it, honestly.

I suppose everyone has their preferences...but man...you and I are quite different it seems.

No, the Manga is the same. I absolutely love the Chimera Ant Arc as well, just a masterpiece in every regard really. Gon's development and Meruem's character were amazing. The side characters were huge as well in their development and the way the world paralleled ours was something special. Honestly can't say anything bad about the arc personally and I never saw the anime version (just the fights, oh and a few random epidoses).
