Forums - Nintendo - I think third party devs have a mindset that gimped Wii games will sell anyways....

Well, atleast we'll see how many people are ready to buy a pretty expensive and gimped game. GH3 sales clearly show that wii is a large market for this type of game.

Honestly, give me NMH2 (and maybe 3?) and nintendo games + few fresh third party IP's and i'm all good (atleast for the next few years)

Why do third parties need to put any effort into the system, you guys will keep buying shitty games no matter what, Sega made a game that is less then par in S&M Olympics and you guys have bought over 4mil copies. Along with all the PS2 ports and games that take about 1month to make, i see no reason to put any effort into wii games for the time being.

So, first people stated that 3rd party wii games don't sell.......since then it has shifted to 3rd paty wii games sell so much, that devs don't need to make any quality at all? Interesting.

lol, I can't believe all these excuses on Wii software. New one all the time.

What are you on about? You made this thread

"The Wii is more like Fox News."

I am a long time Wii fan, but you have just ruined the system for me. =((

Seriously now, the lack of DLC on Rock Band MAY be Nintendo's own fault, but the lack of online and the probable gimped World Tour mode are entirely Harmonix/MTV's.

The way things are running, most third parties sooner or later will realize that their current approach won't work and that they have to make better games for the Wii if they want to stay in business. If they don't... well, that's their problem.

Why? The userbase of the PS3 and 360 go up every day. Each day the potential for profit goes up and once you have an engine built you can reuse combined with developer experience which grows with each new undertaking on the respective platforms you have a recipe for productivity. Developers may have trouble on the first PS3 game or two, but once they figure out its kinks their costs will drop. On top of that, HD graphics are the future. The more developers focus on the non-HD graphics, the more handicapped they'll be in the next generation when every system is HD bar none.

Developers who support the PS3/360 won't suddenly go out of business because they don't support the Wii and it's more than likely they'll be in a much better position skill-wise next generation if they support the other systems.

Your reasoning isn`t wrong WoW, but I think you are missing 2 points.

1) 360/PS3/PC is not a single entity (credits to Bod). Building a game for one of these platforms does not guarantee that the porting will go smoothly. 360 and PC may be similar, but PS3 is not so easy. It takes several months to make a good port evenwhen they start developing on the consoles at the same time. Porting costs are not insignificant. One could make an good game for the Wii with the money to port a AAA PS3/Xbox360 game. The userbases have different tastes, so making a multiplatform game can be bad for business (like a game selling ok on one console and breaking even/losing money on the other).

2) You are right in theory, refusing to support the Wii is not a one way trip to hell. Some developers/publishers proved this: Ubisoft, Epic and Activision. Everyone else is either bleeding money or showing us a pathetic performance this gen. Midway, THQ have crappy sales all around and are losing trucks of money. Take 2 and EA have ok sales (much less than last gen) but are losing lots of money. Konami and Square Enix are 2 big non factors, they are not making Wii games, but their HD console games are few and far between. Sega, Capcom and Ubisoft are supporting everyone evenly.

My conclusion is that only really big and profitable companies like Ubisoft and Activision could choose to ignore the Wii (even though they are not doing it).

BEh,the wii got Zack and Wiki and no more heroes, don't care about gimped ports,
plus in a way all dual analog shooters are massively gimped, they can't get anywhere near wii remote + nunchuck

Look on the bright side. The Wii is outselling a more expenisive console and a ticking time bomb, think that's why it sells in America.

But seriously I don't think the Wii price makes a difference anymore. It might just be unstopable now.

3rd Party Wii games are below par not because the console is necessarily ill suited to them but because Nintendo has a terrible relationship with 3rd Party Developers. There's STILL a six month waiting period for developers who order Wii developer kits on to get them. Nintendo has always had a pretty mediocre relationship with 3rd Parties, it's why way back when Squaresoft jumped ship and went to Playstation. 3rd Parties hated the Nintendo Seal of Quality and the 5th gen sticking with consoles, and they hate the way Nintendo runs the Wii these days as well. Until Nintendo dominates a generation the way the NES did (or change the way they do business with 3rd Parties), 3rd Party developers will take their best stuff elsewhere.

The thing is, of course, that domination might just happen. Nintendo is unique of the three console makers in that they can survive and thrive despite no or little 3rd party support, because they're arguably the best and certainly the best selling software developer out there themselves. It's doubtful, Words of Wisdom, that the Wii is a momentary flash, because Nintendo keeps on coming out with Killer Apps, and is smartly playing an entirely different game than Sony and MS. For them, all the things we're arguing about is small potatoes--they're catering (in their mind) to a much larger market than us. Maybe for the next gen they'll figure out a way to appeal to both hardcore gamers and all their casuals--a Wii HD, basically, with optional standard control pad--but they might just say fuck it and stay with their cash cow.

Also, it's a little disingenuous to say they got killed the previous two generations. They took 2nd place in the 5th gen and were behind XBox for 7th gen by only a couple of million consoles. Sega got killed those two generations. Nintendo did just fine, if not great. And if anyone is the National Enquirer/Fox News of video games (a ridiculous analogy no matter what) it's MS--creating a sheen around two consoles to make them attractive but, deep down, churning out mediocre, faulty product.

My consoles and the fates they suffered:

Atari 7800 (Sold), Intellivision (Thrown out), Gameboy (Lost), Super Nintendo (Stolen), Super Nintendo (2nd copy) (Thrown out by mother), Nintendo 64 (Still own), Super Nintendo (3rd copy) (Still own), Wii (Sold)

A more detailed history appears on my profile.

I have never said Third party wii games don't sell, i have always said that First party games will always sell more no matter what the game is.

So what you're saying is that no matter how shitty a Nintendo developed game is, it will outsell any and all 3rd party games?

What? I meant more and more excuses on why Wii software will or won't sell or how coming from other people.

Sorry, misunderstood you. Thought you were trying to passit off that someone came up with the excuse in the topic.

2000 called. They want their arguments back. And if you could kindly switch "Wii" back to "PS2", and "PS3" and "360" back to "DreamCast" before you ship them, they'd really appreciate it.

To those who continue to argue that the Wii will somehow defy all historical trends and suddenly drop off the face of the planet, making way for the PS3 or 360 to dominate in its place: what you want reality to be and what reality is do not necessarily equal one another. You may be amazed to learn that what you want it to be has much lower priority than what it is. Kindly learn this lesson and stop making ridiculous claims that can only be backed with "because I want it to happen". That is not an argument. It barely qualifies as a belief.

In the same vein though it's ridiculous for people to suggest (I haven't seen it yet in this thread, but the assertion abounds on this site) that due to the massive sales of the Wii developers will all suddenly jump ship on the PS3/360.  Winning over developer support is a lengthy process, and does not/can not happen overnight.  I think we may not see truly significant support for the Wii for at least another year, possibly two, and it will never be at the expense of development for the PS3/360.
