Forums - Nintendo - Rebellion in the dark over NX

Nintendo are brilliant," Kingsley said. "They're a fabulous company and I love them. I always feel they're quite eccentric. They come up with some incredible hardware. Even the Virtua Boy back in the day was really intriguing, and then the clamshell design of their handhelds. To be honest, I just don't know [whether Rebellion will support NX]. The only way I can answer the question is, when we know what the machine is we'll see and we'll have a look. I've always loved Nintendo, I love their games and love their hardware.

"I know no more about [NX] than you do, so we'd be purely speculating," he continued. "If it's something that will run our games and if it isn't some weird wobble balance board or something that's totally irrelevant to what we're doing then, if we can and if there's a market there, if there's a commercial opportunity, then we definitely want to capitalise on that."

Even if they aren't a major company, are you worried about Nintendo's apparent slowness in communicating with devs? Do you care?

Could this basically confirm that Nintendo has sent dev kits only to major third parties? I can imagine Ubisoft, Activision, SE, Namco and Capcom. Uh, not exactly the best.

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

Nah, I would be worried if we're talking about major third parties, this is normal. They'll have their dev kits after the E3, that's for sure.

GDC is this week. We will find out very soon.

"Hardware design isn’t about making the most powerful thing you can.
Today most hardware design is left to other companies, but when you make hardware without taking into account the needs of the eventual software developers, you end up with bloated hardware full of pointless excess. From the outset one must consider design from both a hardware and software perspective."

I was picturing a black ops style ninja war going on at Nintendo HQ based on the thread title! XD

Rob Fahey had a column on this over at Gamesindustry.biz. Basically, it's not unusual for smaller developers and indies to only get a look in after other, more major studios have been given priority.

Nintendo rightly prioritise their own subsidiaries and affiliated studios, before presumably then going to major publishers, for launch titles. It's not as if there need to be dozens upon dozens of games available at day one; that'll only result in dozens of flops alongside the two or three games that actually find an audience.

The major thing Nintendo need to get right with indie support is that indie developers have enough time to launch software during the post-launch period; think of the launch period as wave 1, followed by waves 2 and 3. By that time there'll be a small install base developing and desiring more software, and any kinks in online infrastructure can be ironed out.

At this point, it'd likely still break confidentiality agreements to confirm *anything* about the NX for any developer.

No dev can *legally* step forward and say "NX is great" "NX is awful" or they get a deluge of unwanted attention from rabid Nintendo fans ... and the Nintendo legal department.

Best thing for devs to say at this point to the public is "We know nothing. Wish we could tell you more. "

Not necessarily that Rebellion is bluffing like this - but responses like this shouldn't surprise anyone.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

This isn't surprising since the NX won't launch this year. I guess they will get dev kits after E3 or later this year.

Reading this interview with a well known, reputable, and with years of experience studio, and how he doesn't say a bad word about Nintendo only makes certain newcomers and their moans look even more pathetic.

Maybe they haven't got devs kits yet, but they'll have them soon.

Please excuse my bad English.

Former gaming PC: i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Current gaming PC: R5-7600, 32GB RAM 6000MT/s (CL30) and a RX 9060XT 16GB

The plot thickens. I hope Nintendo starts sending NX dev kits to their nindies soon, they supported the WiiU way better than bigger publishers, and it would be sad to see them go due to this.

You know it deserves the GOTY.
