I'll just copy and paste the YouTube comment I made just now, since I already wrote down all of my thoughts there.
It doesn't look as bad as I thought it would be when I saw the trailer at first. The painting system in the battle is like FP in the older games (but here it's used for every attack), plus it can be used outside of battle, and unlike FP it's extremely likely that you can collect more paint for every enemy that you defeat. And there could be a new layer of depth if there really is a system with decks of cards, especially if you don't get rid of the cards after using them (but that would really depend on if the battles/enemies are designed well enough). And since you can collect cards by filling in paint in areas, it's a good way to reward exploration (Which is a thing that Sticker Star had going for it too, so this also needs to be implemented well)
And it's likely that the world map could be the same as how you travel in Paper Mario 64, just a lot quicker since it's translated into a world map. And there could also be a collectathon aspect to the game if there are red stars to collect for every level/area. The only drawback that I see is that it doesn't look like there will be partners in the game (There is a bucket character, but you don't see them follow Mario around, or fighting in battles), and we don't know if the story will be as good as the first 3 Paper Mario games.
So I think the game has a lot of potential, but you can't really know with Nintendo if they're gonna screw things up or not.
Can't wait for The Zelder Scrolls 3: Breath of The Wild Hunt!
