Forums - PC - Installing a Geforce 2 into a 1996 IBM Aptiva?

I imagine the CPU will be a bottleneck in that. From memory most 3D games from around that era recommended 166-233MHz Pentium processors. You may be able to run the likes of Quake II, Half-Life, MDK and the original Tomb Raider games though.

If it fits and it has drivers though I don't see any reason the build shouldn't work with the GeForce 2MX.

Cool. Those are exactly the types of games I want to run.

What worries me though is that after I've set everything up and uninstalled the old drivers and installed the new ones. That something unexpected might happen like lag or glitches or stuff like that.

I haven't really tried installing a new graphics card in a much older computer before, so I don't know if there are any risks.  6 years isn't extremely long but it's still a long time.

I don't think the PCI bus is compatible with the geforce 2.. It needs a newer version then your system probably has

So even if it fits on the motherboard, it won't work?

the PCI version in 1996 will probably be 2.0 or 2.1 while the GF2MX from years latter will probably demand version 2.2 or 2.3.. it will probably boot with a black screen

I see. That's a shame.

So I guess the safest bet is a Voodoo card. Preferably 2 or 3, but 1 could work too.

I'll make a new thread showing what kind of games I can get running on it when I'm done :)

As for the GeForce 2 MX, I'll put it back in the scrap computer and try to find some RAM and an HDD, and maybe I can make it a windows 98, ME, 2000, or XP machine.

I would go for a Riva TNT 2.. Much cheaper to get used then a voodoo 3 or 2x Voodoo 2 in sli..

The only risk of trying should probably be the PSU. If it can't handle the graphics card, in the worst case you might just brick the whole system. Other than that, there shouldn't really be any danger in trying it out. Worst case, it won't work, I think. That is, unless old systems had more ways to break than modern ones, but I can't imagine any such ways.

Lol I feel like I transported to a thread from the 90's

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

I had a sweet Riva TNT 2 Ultra w/ 2x VooDoo 2 in SLI. Was a beastly machine. Miss those days.

lol, I think I had this same computer. Loved it, Sim City 2000 and Mechwarrior all day.

Oh? I thought i'm the only one rebuild vintage PC here.

What kind of games are you going to install?
