I think that, with the current prices of VR devices, they are in no hurry. They could be ready by the time the technology is available to the masses.

Got it so you think that the price (PSVR pending) will basically make it too expensive to be bothered with right now anyway.  And from what I have seen from the Rift and Vive requirements + headset, you have a point. Oculus has mentioned that they want to iterate on on really hard but if a new headset comes out in a year and a half it probably shouldn't be another $600 with higher requirements.   Imagine the horror of buying a GTX 970 and a Rift and then two years later needing to upgrade everything again.

To beat the dead horse...

Apples fans should love that system. They love buying overpriced minor iterations annually/bi-annually. There might be a big market for it afterall!

Add to that the recent abandonment of PS Vita TV in Japan (their home territory).

http://www.destructoid.com/playstation-vita-tv-discontinued-in-japan-345180.phtml

What does PS Vita TV have to do with VR.  Did Sony abandon the Vita or just the poorly selling set top box.

Did Sony abandon the Vita? Yeah, pretty much.

It sold about 13 million units and I don't see them putting games on it. How many units does the VR headset need to sell to justify support?

Perhaps they'll invest, further, into their own VR Headset.

Maybe that. They could have one ready while the competition is still becoming affordable. A big reason Kinect was a success is because it was $150, supported multiplayer, and had a casual follwing. What massive audience is going to buy VR at $300, $400, or whatever price?

Also, maybe using Oculus on X1 is an option.

Many XBox 360 gamers already bought a PS4, later other X1 gamers; if VR becomes a mainstream, PS4 will have a 70+% market share by the end of the Gen. Otherwise a 60-65% :D

The biggest Handheld games are aways made by Capcom, Square, and Bandai, but Sony, is not abandoning the Vita, is just making games for Vita, and PS4, they still push the Support for the Vita, together with PS4, this is the same thing that Microsoft, is doing with the Xbox One, and PC, they are releasing the Games when is possible, also on Playstation Vita, and they push that kind of Support, don't forget that the Vita, is selling less than the Wii U, with Launch to Launch sales, and the Wii U, is selling less than the DreamCast, with launch to launch sales, so they cannot invest Tons of money for the Vita, but they can make the Console, still have Support.

I'm saying Sony has virtually abandoned Vita in regard to software support.

Sony could support Vita and PS4 at the same time, but they don't feel Vita is worth supporting.

Phil Spencer will say :

If you want VR on Xbox just put your face against the TV.

OT : Kinect was a hit, and even if PS got its own peripheral it didn't end up costing Sony that much. If anything PS3 shone for different reasons during the same period.

If VR is a hit and Xbox doesn't do VR at all before next-gen, MS could find another way for the Xbox brand to shine.

Did you read what i said ?.

Handheld aways sell less software than Home Consoles, look at the Sales of Hardware, with launch to launch numbers.

DreamCast>>>>>>>>>WiiU>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Playstation Vita.

Sony, still support the Vita, pushing Third Party support for the Vita, a lot of games still have Playstation Vita Versions, and the big games that people expect are from Capcom, Square, and Bandai, and sometimes Koei Tecmo, and Sega.

As i said, you can still compare Microsoft, releasing games for PC, as supporting the Xbox One, the same way Sony, releasing games for Playstation 4, and Playstation Vita, and pushing developers to release games for the Vita, as supporting the Vita.

Developers need a reason to release games for the Vita, And Sony, of course are giving those reasons, the console have a lot of Third Party Support.

Sony doesn't push 3rd party support. Sony's website doesn't mention Vita, they don't mention Vita at E3 or other events, they don't support Vita in any significant way other than still producting the device. Maybe things are different in Japan?

No, your comparison is inacurate because Sony almost pretends Vita doesn't exist. They even renamed Vita Tv to Playstation TV outside of Japan.

Sony is not giving developers a reason to support Vita and that's why support has dried up in the west. What you saying Sony is doing with the Vita is kinda the opposite of reality.
