I just think the writting's on the wall. Microsoft is really tipping their hand imo.

If they can recover from the X1 reveal and all that bad press they can recover from  anything. However Xbox is dying. It wont make it past next gen if they release before tech can produce "next gen" stuff. But they will anyway,

Well the future of game consoles is uncertain as it stands. The casual market seems to have moved away from home consoles, Nintendo is feeling the brunt of that.

I think as long as a console has potential of selling around 40 million units, its absolutlely worth doing. A hardcore gaming userbase that large will buy a massive amount of software. A fairly large percentage will also subscribe to XBL.

I guess people are ignoring NIntendo is making a new console and their current machine would be lucky to achieve a userbase of 20 million.

What worked for PS2 doesn't necessarily work today. Also, it was a popular DVD player. Portable gaming devices are also being killed off by phones given their many functions and gaming.

The masses don't a want a gaming device that doesn't do video streaming. Quite frankly, that's less value.

Yes, it indeed work, a Console just need good exclusives and good games to stay strong agaist the competitor, Nintendo, simple does not have Sucess, because their policys take consumers away, they charge too much for something that is cheaper, they still have Region Lock, and the games are locked to the Console, not to the Account.

Playstation 3, was the cheapest Blu-ray reader, so why Playstation 3, did not had the sucess of Playstation 2 ?, because a lot of games that were exclusives became multiplataform, and Xbox 360, also had a lot of good games early in his cicle, the Playstation 3, begun to release their truly big exclusives in 2009, and Beyond, the Wii, was sucessful because had the Wii Mote, and games that even who were not a gamer, played for fun, i saw the Wii, on Medical Station, helping the people with the "Motion Gameplay", so was a console with exclusives that had a lot of use, by gamers, and even by non-gamers.

I Don't believe that people purchase Console for Multimidia, is because of the Games, today we have a lot cheaper options of Multimidia, and if we had Something like the Playstation 2, just focused on Gaming, and with a lot of Good exclusives, of course would sell the same, or even more than the Playstation 2.

Master System, is the Brazilian's Best seller console, still selling on Xbox One, and Playstation 4, levels on the country until nowdays, together with the Playstation 2, more than 5 Millions of units sold, selling over 150 Thousands per year (multiple times more than Xbox One, on japan), and is just a Game Console, people buy it for the games, to play Sonic, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and other games, people prefer to play on Consoles.

Brazil, is not alone, the Playstation 2, even after the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii, launch, the Playstation 2, still sold over 20 Millions of units from 2008, to 2012, over 5 Millions per year, nearly on a faster speed than Xbox One, is selling nowdays, and he had other 3 competitor, also other 3 Next gen consoles, to compete with.

I feel the biggest reason Wii U isn't successful is because the console is its expensive, casuals have moved away from home consoles, lack of 3rd party content, and I really feel consumers don't want that tablet controller. The things you are mentioning aren't important to the average consumer, certainly not the average person who owned a Wii.

360 and PS3 launched before streaming services became popular. PS3 was not a cheap Bluray player, $599 is not cheap for a device that play Blurays especially when you consider most people were content with DVDs. Many were still using CRT TVs at that point. PS3 started to gain steam in 2009 because it went down to $299. Notable exclusives helped push a more affordable PS3.

I'm not saying people buy game consoles solely for media. But its very important. Vita TV for example is considered a joke because its lack of streaming video options.

In regard to Brazil and Master System, you're ignoring a few things. Taxes are really high in Brazil so they relied on a 3rd party to manufacture the console there. NES would have likely dominated Brazil had they done the same thing. People in Brazil stuck with Master System for a long time because buying a modern machine is expensive. Without the bullshit taxes Brazil's console gaming market would be very different.

Microsoft didn't hire people who were passionate about gaming. They hired Don Mattrick. They were trying to do a bait an switch, and failed. Putting Phil in place was a move to improve their gaming division, sure. But I don't believe they're interested in competeing in consoles anymore. If they were, you wouldn't see them letting their biggest and best IP go to PC. You wouldn't see them letting Titanfall go. You wouldn't see them letting the COD marketing business go. The Xbox platform is owned by the richest company out of the three by miles. They could afford to spend big, but they're not. Why? To me, it's obvious. There's no "winning" by doing what they're trying to do. They're not even competeing anymore.

And as far as units sold, it does not equal failure or success, profits do. I use to think just like you, but recently, I've come to realize that it's foolish and arbitrary to use "units sold" as a means of judging a companies successes. Nintendo is making a killing. They're doing better than either company when it comes to gaming. So, really, who's the victor? The company that sells the most pieces of plastic? Or the company that makes the most money? Ideally, those two things should go hand in hand, but they obviously don't and we're all foolish for buying into the pissing contest of "unit sales".

So Don Mattrick represents all the passion in gaming at MS? This is why I say you have an anti Xbox agenda. You say crap like that and give no credit to people at MS that make notable games.

It seems like your idea of competing is money hatting Titanfall 2 and buying the marketing of CoD. You don't want to give them credit for making or funding good games I guess.

MS does spend a lot of money. They have a lot of games coming, I assume more games will be announced this year, we don't know what marketing deals they have planned with 3rd parties. It sounds like you aren't happy unless MS is wasting an endless stream of money.

Nintendo's success right now has more to do with the 3DS, not Wii U. By the way, you're very critical of MS not competing enough. But you boast about NIntendo even though they are barely relevant in the home console market. If NIntendo is doing so well right now financially, maybe you should criticize them for not buying Titfanfall exclusivity or CoD marketing. :-p

Microsoft never wanted to or cared about making great games and being in the console business. It was about stopping Sony. They said so themselves. It was always a trojan horse platform, set to exploit gamers on a course to owning the living room. That totally failed with Xbox One and now, I believe that they're switching gears and moving the platform into other areas where it can be successful. There's many reasons why I believe this but one of them is again, letting their biggest IP leave the platform. You just don't do that if you're interested in having a hardware platform. That's what software companies and third parties do.......

As some have pointed out, XB1 is outperforming the XB360 on aligned launch. The issue is that many new gamers are choosing PS4, resulting in significantly more sales for the PlayStation brand.

In the coming months, I forsee XB1 sales dwindling. After a few years of continuously dropping because those with PCs will be able to play almost all XB1 exclusives, gamers will start to question the XB1's purpose. Combined with a PS4 and a 3DS, their coverage on the gaming front wouldn't require an XB1, and the only people who will continue buying it are fans and the uninformed. Our people who buy it for non-game reasons.

And despite what Microsoft says, this will all spiral into no new Xbox, at least not in the way we know it. I could see Microsoft making a line of PCs called "Xbox", similar to Surface, or even an application/storefront to host specifically games. But a new Xbox console? It's looking less and less likely.

xbox two will be release on 2018.
at the end of 2016 sony will have around 60 millon ps4 for near 30 of xbox one.

in the year 2015 has been released about 46 exclusive games on ps4 that has not been released on xbox one.
xbox one only had about 8-9 exclusive games. i am talking about physical games, not indies.

in the year 2016 microsoft has nothing.
crackdown, fable legends, quantum break, gears of war 4, forza horizon, scalebound, halo wars 2, killer instinct and maybe 4 games more.

in the year 2016 ps4 has in exclusive console sonys..

the question is....
who is the person can buy a xbox one when you look the games of each system?
more own IPs are from sony.
better bussiness with third party are from sony. remenber tomb raider will be for ps4 and street fighter 5 is only on sony system.
much more third party games on playstation systems..
etc..

at the end of 2016 the war is over.
microsoft now see that they can´t fight with sony at the same time. so.. they need release a new system as soon as possible to do the same as 360 did with ps3.
they need 1 year ahead of sony to fight and eat market to ps5.

How many times we will have to say that ?, Playstation 3, sold because of the Exclusives, the Master System, would still sell more on Brazil, because Sonic, is more popular than Mario, here on the Country, and the Other consoles still selling, the PS3, the Xbox 360, The PS2, but only the PS2, and the Master System, got this Main Stream on Brazil, but PS3, Xbox 360,  Xbox One, Playstation 4, sold less, or and selling less than the Master System.

Playstation 3, was the Cheapest Blu-ray reader, so if you had to run a Blu-ray disc on 2006, Playstation 3, was the Cheapest option, and how can you say about Playstation 2, selling 20-25 Millions of units from 2008, to 2012 ?, this is 5-6 Millions per Year, more than Wii U, and Nearly more than Xbox One, even after 6 Years the Playstation 3, and Xbox 360, launched.

Tax, have nothing to do with it, do you think that Someone, will buy a Console from 30 Years ago, that they don't want, only because is 200RS$, insteady of buying atleast a Last Gen console, for 600-700RS$ ?, i want to see if the Americans still buying old consoles  even after so many years.

People still Import consoles for purchase, but also still buying 30 Years old consoles, on the Dozen of thousands units every year, only because they want to play on the Console.

You want to say that My Country is poor, and they cannot purchase a Next Gen, or Previous gen console, because of that they are Stuck with Master System ?, The average Wage is 2000RS$, stores sell Xbox One, nearly for free with 1 Year of EA Acess, for 1200-1400RS$, and Playstation 4, for 1600-1800RS$.

So people still prefer to purchase a 200RS$ system, from 30 years ago only because they don't have Money ?, you Know that Atleast Half of the Brazilians have a Month wage of 6000-8000RS$, don't you ?, the others are More rich, and the minority is Poor, is less than 5-10%.

The country have 200 Millions of Citzens, is not because of Tax, or anything like this, is because the console is good, have good games like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Sonic.

Exclusive is the main reasons that Consoles sell this much, the Wii, sold a lot because was the only console that had Motion exclusives, with the Wii Mote, if the Wii, did not had the Wii Sports, that was a Exclusive, do you think that it would have sold 100 Millions of Units ?.

Where on earth master system is selling on X1/PS4 levels?

I think 2020 is realistic. And as others have said, yes, Xbox One is trailing PS4, but PS4 has exploded as a sales juggernaut, but that doesn't automatically make Xbox One a failure. It's exceeding Xbox 360 at the same point in its life cycle.

The people who are saying that seem to ignore that 360 had a huge surge in sales in 2010-2012 from "casuals" due to Kinect. Unless XB1 has a massive late life resurgence than matching 360 sales is very unlikely. VR/AR could potentially cause that but it seems as though Sony has the upper hand currently with Playstation VR releasing later this year.

XB1 will likely follow a more standard sales curve which is peak in its 2nd or 3rd full year then begin to decline.
