I'm on a mac too. So no virus scan, no ad aware, no defrag... I basically open my macbook, use it, and close it when I'm done.

Two times a week, but it gets tedious at times since the virusprogram interferes with every process and bogs down the rig to a sleepy dredge...
It starts automatically, and when it does I usually just turn off the monitor and go do something else until its done.
