I don't think it would have a huge effect, just that I could picture an official price cut to $299 happening.

MS have to very careful here. It's all about the power difference. If they make it too cheap it would just cement the fact the PS4 is more powerful and not represent what MS would want it to which is a 'good deal'.

I don't think being $50 cheaper is going to cause people to think it's significantly weaker than PS4. Regardless, I don't think there is anyway XB1 will catch up to PS4, even in the States.

I'm 95% certain that the price simply does not matter. ;)

Same here, my original post simply said I could picture an official price cut in the next few months.

Oh I know, I was just making a joke using the words of someone in a past thread. heh.

Agreed. The best MS can hope for is a 'holding' strategy but I doubt that will work either. Just look at the amount of games coming to the PS4 console only in Feb and look how many are coming out in March. Monopolising the press is 50% of the battle won ... perhaps more.

I've said before that this generation reminds me a lot of the 5th generation.

PS4=PS1, the market leader in all regions and dominates globally, able to secure a lot of exclusive deals with 3rd parties.

XB1=N64, held its own initially in America with a strong Shooter/Sports/Racing audience but slowly started to lose momentum.

Wii U=Saturn, poor performance in all markets, majority of sales due to 1st party franchsies.

Hey is feb npd 5 weeks or 4? Whats the date for it?

edit: Is it jan 31st to Feb 27th? or to March 5th?

So are the numbers in the OP pretty much settled as the best-guess figures? If so I'll start updating my charts later tonight, maybe after dinner.

This months NPD leaks on NeoGAF do not contain exact hardware sales numbers.

Therefore using them in a chart would be misleading.

Smartest post I've read in a while.

Only subscribers have access to NPD data and have to sign an NDA. They're not going to be posted on VGChartz.

But aqua is doing her best to still get the numbers out there. Surely this is almost as bad as releasing the numbers herself.

I haven't seen Aqua post any numbers. Have you?

My post isn't about whether the NPD Group should or should not release data publicly. Its more that no one should expect or believe that they are owed that data. The NPD Group, like many market research firms, do not release their data in the public domain or for free. They provide a paid service to clients and its up to them what data they want to release publicly. The Interactive Entertainment industry isn't the only industry where market research firms charge for detailed data. So whilst I fully understand the comparison to the film industry releasing data publicly, it's not exactly the same thing.

That being said, I'm all for a more open industry where data is more widely available. But expecting people to leak that data when they're under NDA is wrong.

Where is the Xbox One $300 at? I haven't seen it that price anywhere in weeks. Not to imply it doesn't exist, just curious. If MS wants to sell closer to PS4, they clearly need to be cheaper. There's no reason for the weaker hardware to be the same price. Just like the Wii U still being $300 is a goddamn joke. But maybe Nintendo and MS like making money more than a higher bar on a sales chart, idk.

Resident Evil Origins Collection - ~38k (73% PS4)
Life is Strange - ~27k (74.8% PS4)

Look at those results. Why aren't Xbox gamers buying these games I mean at most the PS4 should be getting 60% because of userbase advantage in the US. Something is missing from the equation for PS4 to get these windfall shares. I know Capcom is ultra unlikely to have another Xbox One exclusive with breaks like that.

RE sucks and LIS is a pretty niche title. Maybe it was advertised on PS4 more? Who knows.

$50 gift cards and free game effectively make some of those bundles $299. No deals for PS4 atm afaik. No explicit $299 bundle though afaik.
