Forums - Gaming - Apple has a $200 billion war chest, should it buy Nintendo and Sega?

It's not possible to buy what isn't for sale.

Let them start with paying a proper amount of taxes first.

They are? Does anyone has sources for this? I've asked once already, but based on what, do they have enough to buy MS? Do people REALLY believe that Apple could, one day, buy MS? Really?

Apple is doing things no corporation has ever done in terms of the type of money that make, they have larger cash reserves than MS and Google combined and they continue to post profits that dwarf even oil corporations like Exxon Mobil at their peak. They have double the cash reserve of the US government, lol.

Apple has more cash than every S&P 500's (the top companies in the world) market cap outside of just 14 of them. That's unbelievable.

Apple has over $200 billion in cash reserves, Microsoft's market cap is $396 billion, but Apple's cash reserves have been growing at a rapid pace, so yes they could theoretically make a pitch for MS some day (especially if Microsoft's stock drops).

Disney would be a better target for for Apple though and they do have the cash reserves to do it, but it would take pretty much their entire cash hoarde.

FYI Apple has 170 Billion in cash reserves, not 200.

The truth is Nintendo and Sony wouldn't be worth buying to Apple for what they bring to the table.

Apple sells more hardware in a quarter than Nintendo or Playstation do in 2 years in some cases.

While having Mario & friends exclusive to Apple devices I'm sure has some certain appeal to Apple, it's not really worth the $30 billion or so it would require.

The company Apple should target some day is probably Disney ... that would cost a lot, but it would also bring a lot of things under the Apple umbrella ... ie: Disney's catalog of films could be Apple exclusive if they wanted for instance.

It's $206 billion as of last October:

And probably larger now because they just posted the highest profit in corporate history for the Oct-Dec period of $18+ billion in those three months.

If we lived in a world where poison pills, government intervention and a multitude of other factors were not an issue.... it would be possible. But Nintendo and Sony are untouchable behind the protection of the Japanese Gov, MS would fight tooth and nail to stay Inependent and so a hostile takeover is impossible as the shares would inflate to an ungainly sum.

In this day and age "takeovers" are actually rare to non-existant. What you have is mergers unless it is a giant buying a mino. Where two large companies decide they have some symbiosis or synergy and can be vertically integrated to create value... this is where a merger is most likely.

Apple is so much larger in terms of power over say a Nintendo or Sony that it would effectively be a take over even if it was labelled a "merger".

Larger in terms of "power"? What do you mean? Assets? Stock value or some other metric?

"Tim cook: Apple now has $216B in cash"

Copy/paste to google.

This thread has spun out of control. It started out messy with a ridiculous proposal but damn did we manage to make it more ridiculous.

That's not how it works. Just because they post a profit doesn't mean their cash increases.

I know what you are getting at, but Soundwave is correct. Apple has over 200b in cash.

"Tim cook: Apple now has $216B in cash"

google it.
