Forums - Politics - Obama proposes $4.1 trillion U.S. budget, including a $10-per-barrel fee on oil to fund clean-energy transportation

so hes taking advantage of the cheaper oil prices by taxing gasoline, so the Money goes to the government pockets instead the consumers? if i am reading correct

This is exactly what the government did over here in Puerto Rico. If it weren't for that tax, gas prices would've been on 44 cents the liter instead of 50 cents. As always, the government can't see us enjoying things.

To the people hating on Obama you do realise bush created the cluster fuck he's trying to resolve and if another bush like republican held the past 2 terms your country would be way worse off. Such short sightedness.

Actually, both parties are to blame. If you want to talk about the economic crash of 2008 specifically, Republicans are partly to blame because a lot of them knew what was up but because they were buddies with the folks on Wallstreet, they didn't do much to inform the public about what was going to happen. It also didn't help that many of them probably owned stock in the companies that would be affected had anyone broken the news about an imminent economic collapse. They hoped that the market would somehow fix itself. Democrats on the other hand started it all back during the Carter administration. There was a demand by Carter and other Dems at the time that banks start making it easier for low income people to be approved for loans to get a house. Due to government pressure, banks had started approving loans that they knew people would never be able to pay off. The individuals who approved the loans figured that their asses would be covered if they only had a few bad loans here and there and they would still get their commission so they didn't give a shit. So this goes on for three decades and right before you know it, the shit hits the fan. As for these financial institutions who were "too big to fail"? Both major parties agreed that they were.

So the moral of the story is that voting Republicans or Democrats in and out of office, haivng one replace the other every few years is pointless because the results will still be the same. Vote for a third party and end the 150 year political monopoly that has ruined America.

This is why he will go down as the worst
President so far. Says stuff in his State of the Union address taking credit for low gas prices when we all known OPEC controls the pricing then turns around and adds 10 dollar a barrel fee basically a high federal tax on gas. SMH

I can think of far worse presidents than Obama specifically the one that came before him.  What did you expect him to do wave a magic wand and see the economy grow while balancing the budget after one of the worst crashes?

Anyways, the Republicans will just ignore his budget and take till the last moment to pass a budget.  I say we cut military spending and crack down on the waste in the Pentagon.  There is so much waste in Afghanistan and Iraq through private contractors it is ridiculous.  You know they spent $80 million or so on one shitty natural gas station in Afghanistan (some of that money was used to convert some vehicles to NG just so there would be a point to the station which in the end there really wasn't a point)?  Or that they spent 400+ million on shitty Italian transport planes that fell apart in flight and weren't made for desert conditions which were eventually grounded and scrapped for 20 thousand or so...  So much waste in the military budget.  Sad part is that Republicans always want to increase the military budget instead of making it more efficient/cutting out waste.

Pretty much this.  Military spending by the US has been out of control pretty much ever since the US enterd WWII.  Its ridiculous that the US spends more on denfense then the next ten countries combined.

Although I agree we waste a lot of money in military, we have to agree that military technology is a great investment.

Well I kind of agree.... money spent on R&D is a great investment, money on maintaining and replacing missiles etc, not so much.

Shouldn't they wait to do this until H2 is a viable fuel alternative, or maybe they want people to go electric. Personally, I would've never considered electric cars when I was younger, but I have been really happy with the transition, I drive a tesla though...But maybe once more electric cars appear on the market this won't be much of a problem, the only ones affected in this scenario would be companies.

ever asked yourself the question who you would have to pay back the debt to?

The biggest portion of it is foreign governments and investors. The governments part is easy, though investors could be more difficult. Worst case scenario, we can probably just pull a Mexico and get the government to swap itself in as our debt holder.

Domestic individuals and institutions should theoretically be the easiest; just buy back treasury bonds and get in touch with the individuals who hold the debt (assuming we somehow have the money).

Finally, for federal accounts, we'd need to either slash our budget on current items or somehow dedicate more to cover future purchases without actually spending our own money. Sounds super confusing, but considering we've got a government that literally owes money to itself, that's not surprising.

so if we break it down to the core and view this picture on a global scale why should you be forced to pay it back when you, me and probably 90% of the people here on vgchartz own a part of the debt all countries hold together?

If our country would just legalize weed nationally and quit fighting the worlds' battles, most of the money problems would be solved, imo.

Because people on VGC probably hold next to nothing in debt, and because the way the government gets money is by, you guessed it, not spending it on its citizens.

Eliminate everything the federal government has control over other than the military. Let states figure out taxes, let people figure out how to save up money for retirement, eliminate planned parenthood, eliminate the federal department of education, eliminate the IRS, eliminate income tax (boost sales tax), and get rid of every other kind of program that suggests humans aren't intelligent enough to survive on their own. The few people that are dependent, if they have no loved ones to take care of them, then yes we can help them but that isn't that many people % wise. I respect others enough to know that they can take care of themselves when they have to and I don't assume people need the government to rescue them (unless they really do).
