So when can I expect to be taxed for carbon or is that already a thing?

Hopefully pretty soon

Likely not soon, because a lot of the American population, and not to mention American corporations would rather continue to ruin the climate :-/

Or we can allow technology to do it's thing and get rid of all the restrictions we have on it. Technology is improving to the point where this problem won't be a big issue in the future.

I can't express how much I'm looking forward to helping pay back all this national debt at some point in my life.

Don't worry, that won't happen. The US will default sooner or later. Not that that will be very enjoyable though...

We could pull a Hitler and declare all debt void and go into even more wars.  Ally with Canada and go to war with Mexico to create some living space then push all the way down to Panama.  Conscript all illegals and former citizens of said countries and ship them to the Middle East to start a new front for the oil reserves.

The problem with defaulting is other countries don't want to do deals with you anymore. They will start looking at other alternatives. War won't do anything really. Other Countries already know the risk of doing deals.

Technology is doing it's thing: coming up with fossil-free energy solutions. It's just that people/corporations are reluctant to take them in use cause it costs money, which is why you need a carbon tax to incentivize it.

Or maybe the fact technology like this will be more of an incentive because in the long run it pays off over time. For example, I know someone who runs a taxi company and he switched to hybrids which over time saved him a lot of money because it takes about 15 dollars to fill up the tank and hybrids last longer.

Government should make a device that charges us by how much carbon we exhale and extend that to any animals we may own as well. Forget the corporations, they'll get a pass since they basically run the US government at this point.

(I'm joking btw)

ever asked yourself the question who you would have to pay back the debt to?

Obama is in the same place the conservatives are in the UK, the previous government just spent everything and more... it's going to take years to sort this mess out... if people think this mess is just because of Obama (or in the UK the conservatives), they haven't been taking much notice of the mess the world was in when they got in power.

Anyway the debt has to be paid back at some point... I got to love some people (not here) who just go on about spending more money to get out of debt.

I understood you were joking, but I'm not joking when I say I think there should be a carbon tax (obviously not for carbon you exhale though...).

The biggest portion of it is foreign governments and investors. The governments part is easy, though investors could be more difficult. Worst case scenario, we can probably just pull a Mexico and get the government to swap itself in as our debt holder.

Domestic individuals and institutions should theoretically be the easiest; just buy back treasury bonds and get in touch with the individuals who hold the debt (assuming we somehow have the money).

Finally, for federal accounts, we'd need to either slash our budget on current items or somehow dedicate more to cover future purchases without actually spending our own money. Sounds super confusing, but considering we've got a government that literally owes money to itself, that's not surprising.
