Forums - Nintendo - Rumor: Star Fox Zero continues to have development issues due to motion controls

This is just my guess as to what's happened here, but knowing Nintendo's internal politics, I think it may be spot on:

- Mr. Miyamoto really championed the idea of the Wii U tablet. I remember reading this during the Iwata Asks I think at some point.

- When the Wii U tablet was floundering rather than replace it, Nintendo opted not to as this would be embarrassing for Mr. Miyamoto and not allow him to "save face". Instead Nintendo's higher ups kinda accepted the system would be a failure, but they were willing to give Miyamoto a chance to show what the tablet controller could do.

- This is where Project: Guard, Project: Giant Robot and Star Fox 0 come from ... they are Miyamoto's attempts to justify the controller after the fact.

- Development on all these projects hasn't been going great, because Miyamoto is trying to force feed use of the controller, but no one has the authority at Nintendo to reign Miyamoto in because of his reputation, so everyone is kinda just letting this go on.

Yeah, I also thought this a while back.  I just don't understand how Miyamoto was able to convince everyone that it was in the Wii U's best interest to allocate close to a third of the Wii U's total cost on an input device.

The disappointing thing is that I love the 2nd screen (and gyro controls) as long as it's only used as a complementary tool to make traditional gameplay easier (something like easier inventory management or level design on Mario Maker).  I just don't think the 2nd screen on a console works when it's used as a primary focus where playing a game would be impossible without it because those games tend to make you constantly refocus attention between two screens.

^ You're both right on the money, I reckon.

The controls are crippling the game, but nobody has the clout to override Miyamoto's insistence on it.

I'll get flak for this, but I believe that like Aonuma, Miyamoto has become a liability to Nintendo and needs to go.

Seems like Miyamoto might be suffering from George Lucas syndrome in that he could be surrounded by people who tell him what they think he wants to hear rather than what he needs to hear because they're too scared to to disagree with him.

Exactly. And like Lucas, he's damaging his own legacy.

I don't know if i'd go that far. Sure, Miyamoto is not the same as he once was (who ever is), since he's been more involved in managing the overall game department and less on focusing on individual projects, but it's not like things that he gets involved in are becoming duds. With the exception of Sticker Star and the experimental Steel Diver (I've not played those games so I can't judge them), he did make Pikmin 3, recommended online multiplayer in Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, and produced 3D Land, which all have been well received by fans and critics. And it's not like he's become a complete liability. He is training and influencing the new blood, including the devs of Splatoon. And wasn't he involved in some fashion in Super Mario Maker, a game that he's made numerous public appearances for? If we're looking at dud after dud, then he is damaging his own legacy, but that's not really the case. Plus, who the hell knows how the employees interact with Miyamoto, are they yes men or do they have their own input? It's almost like when we assumed who Iwata was when he was something more than we gave him credit for.

Anyway, who knows what's really going on with Star Fox Zero. I've heard mixed receptions on the gyro controls, even though its been already known that you can switch to normal controls. Some have pointed out some improvements over time. We can only wait and see. As much as I can Liam and his work, this is still a rumor and I take rumors with grains of salt. We don't really know what goes inside Nintendo's infamously secret doors. If it turns out crappy, then I won't mind being wrong as it is what it is. Miyamoto has been involved in duds before and is known to experiment, whether its good or bad.

Shiggy Miitomo just realised that Wii U already dead and SF0 can't help it in any way.

I wonder why people hyped this game because of Platinum Games involvement. All the StarFox-esque sections in P* games kinda shitty.

*crosses fingers*

Please... please... scrap motion controls.... pleeeeaaaassseeee.

I hope they do not have motion control.

My 10 year old daughter upon hearing about Star Fox having motion controls..

*Japanese accent*

"Oh, we have great game Star Fox. How can we improve it? Oh, I KNOW!! Lets take a dump on it"... *proceeds to put imaginary copy of Star Fox behind her butt and crap on it*... "There, now you have great game."

hahaha.

I dunno, the way things stand now Starfox Zero looks destined to be a trainwreck. I'm not just talking about these rumours either; there's the fact it was already delayed, the fact another delay has been rumoured, the general unpopularity of the two-screens concept, the lacklustre graphics...

Of course, there's still the possibility it will turn out fine, but things look pretty worrying at the moment.

My guess is if the game turns out to be crappy, Nintendo/Miyamoto will distance themselves from it and try to blame Platinum, even though the core ideas that aren't working come from Miyamoto apparently. So basically Platinum is kinda set up as the fall guy for this. I still hope the game turns out good.
