Exactly. Nobody is saying it is a bad game. It was that some of us were expecting to see something that push the hardware to its limits and clearly DK didn't do. On top of that, people were defeding the decision because DK was the right move and was going to sell very well, even some said it will help to move consoles.
I can't blame them as Returns on Wii gave that illusion. DK to me is a game that has to be released on an established fanbase, not as a system seller.

But Splatoon had the right ingredients to be a success: it appeals to a broader audience because
1) It is a shooter with a strong online community, so appeals to an older audience
2) But it doesn't involve blood, rather cartoon violence, so it's suited for kids too
3) Emphazises on ''being cool'', with trendy clothes, shoes
4) It is colorful, bubbly, with whack music so appeals to the Japanese audience
