Forums - Nintendo - Splatoon will be bigger than Zelda Part 2

Hi guys

About a year ago, I made a thread which stated that Splatoon would become a bigger series than Zelda in terms of sales. I said it would be Nintendos next Mario Kart / Smash Bros. and surpass Zelda, likely next-gen. Many agreed, many disagreed, and some even laughed. Now, a year later, Splatoon has sold over 4 Million with the low user base of Wii U.

With that said, Zelda does sell a lot. So I figured we could update this thread and see if opinions have changed. What do you think about this possibility now?

My thoughts: Splatoon sold more than I had originally thought with its first game. I fully expect it to be one of Nintendos strongest sellers on their next console now. It should have no problem outselling the next Zelda (meaning, NX exclusive Zelda)

I don't see the new Zelda selling more than 3.5m units...

To think a game about kids who can transform into squids might possibly sell more than one of Nintendo's most iconic IPs in gaming. xD

I'm honestly not sure how well Zelda U will do, especially with an NX port being very possible, guess we'll have to see.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Prediction: If NX does very well, Splatoon 2 will sell 10 million+.

bet: lost

Is Splatoon the first new ip from Nintendo that isn't from Miyamoto?

Edit: It sure is doing better then any new IP's Shigru Miyamoto has made.

Yes, it can be. But since we don't know exactly how Zelda U will be released I can't draw conclusions yet. If it's released for both Wii U and NX about the same time, I bet it will sell more than Splatoon.

But then again, Splatoon 2 could crush both on NX.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Bro, you ain't lying. Splatoon is already around 1.5mil in Japan. That's on a horrible userbase. If it were on anything that has a 10mil userbase, I definitely could see it doing 3-5mil in Japan alone!

Splatoon, like Mario Kart, is a game casual players can get into. Zelda, not so much. So yes, I totally agree that it can over take it commercially. It will depend on how great Nintendo is at evolving the IP though. Mario Kart didn't get to where it got by them rehashing the series. They made great strides in the gameplay to get to where it is now. Splatoon will need to do the same thing.

Sadly, what that "thing" is will probably be lessening the difficulty curve.

Seriously?

Not sure what was wrong with my question? My Point tho is Nintendo should be giving more freedom to their younger developers and I have the feeling that Splatoon only came about because of poor sales of the Wii U.

Yeah, I think it's very safe to make that assumption based on the amazing things that Splatoon has been able to do on Wii U. It had turned into a legit Powerhouse franchise for Nintendo, ESPECIALLY in Japan, I mean they just had a LIVE concert of Callie and Marie over there didn't they? (Love those two by the way, they give that game the attitude and personality and... Freshness that it is known for.) It is Nintendo's shooter franchise, like how Mario Kart is the racer, and Smash Bros. is the their fighter. And given its growing, phenominal success, and if Nintendo continues to build upon its momentum... it may even have a legitimate shot at topping those two as Nintendo's #1 selling multiplayer franchise. It's getting extremely close to Smash Wii U, and it's still got a loooong way to go towards Mario Kart 8, honestly I don't think it'll ever catch Mario Kart 8. But the potential right now is limitless and the future of this IP is looking extraordinarily bright! Kudos to Nintendo for the amazing job they've done with this game and this franchise.
