Forums - Nintendo - All Splatoon content has finally released! Was it not a good idea to release it this way instead of delaying it?

Yes a good idea indeed. But a risky one too.

The only reason for it not being crushed by the media is that Splatoon itself is extremely fun and fresh. If it was an established IP, I bet they wouldn't get away with this.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

The way the game is designed it works with this model, you're never using every map at a time due to the rotation it also really helped to get to grips with the game's concept.

Map and mode rotation to me only contributed to the games feeling like it lacked in content. Heck, it's the main reason. When you're stuck with the same two modes (whichever mode is on ranked atm and Turf Wars), and the same two maps for hours at a time, they limit the amount of content you can play so drastically. If I could change one thing about Splatoon, I'd change the rotation system, because that was much more detrimental to it than the content launch system. However if I could change several things, I'd change both.

Personally I would've much preffered it all to release at once, because now, by the time all the content was out I had already moved on from the game.

Well nothing is stopping you from coming back if you are interested in the new content. When you say moved on what do you mean exactly, were you satisfied with the game?

It might be an OCD of mine, but I honestly don't like the idea of a "barebones" game disc with all of its later content present through internet updates and patches. Whether releasing patches gauges interest or not, it's not something I appreciate, and thus would have prefer them delaying things.

Did you buy the game already? You could wait until everything has released, that was always an option.

Do u know the number of maps/weapons/gear/modes now compared to what was available at launch?

Iirc 5 stages 1 online mode 20 weapons at launch, 16 maps 4 online modes 80 weapons now. Don't remember gear at all but there's certainly more of it.

I can see different views on it.

Personally, I lost interest in Splatoon overtime, but all these updates, especially things like new weapons and maps is what allowed me to regain some interest, and keep coming back ever since May.

At the same time, there are still some people who only really got interest in Splatoon for the first couple months, then stopped playing the game completely.

Personally, I might start slowing down on Splatoon now that updates are over, but I still plan to plan very long sessions on good occasion, as Splatoon is one of the best games on the Wii U.

That happens with every game though, people just lose interest and/or get more interested in other things. No game is played forever by everyone, but like you said the updates likely helped extend it's life for some.

It was ceartainly the best move to periodically keep releasing content.I still think the game launched with low content, and that is something I hope they dont repeat with the sequel, but yeah, the content-over-time aproach was a stroke of genius.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

OK so they roughly quadrupled the amount of content, that's pretty good.

Actually the fact that my Wii U's HDMI ouput stopped working has made sure I can't play Splatoon. As for what I mean by that I moved on, see your own reply to Ültra. I never intended to play Splatoon forever, so I'd have preferred it if all the content was there when I did play it, instead of Nintendo "forcing" me to go back to it after 4-5 months (stopped playing it in august) if I wanted the full experience. While I was satisfied with what I did play, that's irrelevant really. I would've enjoyed it more if I had access to all content from the beggining.

Now, I know you'll just say that I could've waited for all content to release, and technically speaking, that's true (even though the reason I did get Splatoon was that the Splatoon bundle was the only Wii U SKU they had available). But that's like saying that games with day one DLC is okay, because after all you can just wait for 12 months and buy the GOTY edition with all DLC included, for the same price as the base game cost at launch. I mean, you get all the content, including the DLC, and you pay the same as those who bought it at launch did, right?

In the end, I don't like this business practice. It was a great move for franchise building and sales, but it was hardly a great move against consumers.

Releasing it like this was boring. I stopped playing the game months ago. So I have no idea of a lot of the new stuff in it. I got bored, because nothing was in the game, for a long time.

It has plenty of stuff now so go play it!

I think that the way they decided to release updates was just amazink, the only problem is that reviewes and maybe even sales of the first months were affected by the few maps/weapons, imho this is a problem that'll show off only in this first iteration of Splatoon since from the next one they can already pack in all the weapons from the current game and some stages too...

The game sold a million in less than a month, no way sales were negatively affected! If anything it helped the games leg's a bit with people holding out.

That doesn't fix it. Nintendo would need to release a Splatoon GOTY version or something with everything included on the disc.

I think it was great idea, but I am not sure if it will work for another game.

It works but for negative reasons, mainly the map and rank mode rotation. Only two maps and one mode every 4 hours isn't the best idea at all, it should at least be 3 maps and two modes.

We all know why they did it, and hopefully next time they avoid this by releasing the game complete, with a proper map and rank mode rotation
