lol are you sure this console would sell less than the Wii U? i'm not so sure about that. but anyway, assuming this is outlining a strategy for their next console to sell boatloads, i agree with a lot of your points and disagree with a lot of them. i think youre onto something about bundling a high quality new mario game. that is what they did for the snes, and i think they really should stick to their roots in this regard. another thing that i like is keeping the online free while investing in making the experience better than the competition's. companies are afraid to do things like this, but it is going to be worth it for your install base. it will turn heads. i like your idea about publishing discounts for third parties and taking away from the compeition. what i dont like: nintendo selling the hardware at a loss. im not sure they really need to do this. nintendo has had a history of selling it at a profit, and this isnt something that i think they should consider changing. ESPECIALLY since we are asking them to invest more in their online while making it free and packing in a game that would make them millions of dollars if sold separately. they have to sell the console for a profit, thats just all there is to it. also, it isnt necessary for the system to have the most powerful hardware. nintendo doesnt need to be making a moneypit of a console. the system should be easy to make a profit on. that is something that is really going to make a difference for themselves and for third parties. the most powerful hardware can be a disadvantage in a lot of ways. im just somewhat skeptical about that. i think it needs to be efficient hardware. |
In order to get third parties, you're going to need hardware to entice them as well as extremely loose policies and low publishing costs. That would be the first reason why the hardware would need to be so powerful. The other reason is consumer based. If I released the next Nintendo console with inferior hardware, and got games like GTA 6, FF16, KH4, COD because I offered their publishers a 30% discount in publishing and promotional advantages, how am I going to convince gamers that my console is now the platform of choice when the game is going to look and play worse? You have to understand who you're selling to and right now, the key to winning the industry is through core gamers. You have to impress the Twitch crowd, bloggers and people who are the most vocal so that they will filter it down to the masses. That's how you create an advantage. Having the next COD not only on your new console, but having it look, run, play, sound and feel superior? That's how you start to reverse your reputation.
Nintendo has the IP to retain it's core fans. They have to branch out from there and reach for Sony's marketshare if they want to grow and secure themselves as market leader instead of a market follower. The SNES released two years after the Genesis and Yamauchi decided to take those two years and release hardware that was two years more advanced. I think that's exactly what needs to happen again if they want to be taken seriously.

dont you see?? thats what makes this so much fun! come up with a way that the NX could sell less. be creative about it. Look at Hiku's response. very entertaining way to make sure the system sells less. |
Name it again Wii something, dont marketing it, hardware basically upgraded WiiU with new usles gimmick, again PPC architecture, price it $500, again having very weak launch titles and huge software droughts.
Name has to be Wii U and Mii

[3DS] Winter Playtimes [Wii U]
Let the same guys who make amiibo manufacture it. They'd need decades to produce 10 million.
what would the new "concept" be?
It is focused on amiibo functionality
what would you name it?
Awiibo
what would the console look like?
A boring hard disk drive
what features would it have?
It will scan amiibos to complete the games released (amiibo sold separately)
what would the controller be like?
Another undersused Gamepad
