Forums - Politics - Climate Change: What's your take?

Since travelling china at the moment my stance is that climate change sucks.

I am freezing my balls off and here in the 'south' they don't have heating because they never needed to...

I think its just the world leaders power agenda to push ''climate change'' in order for the big energy companies to get more money.

I truly believe some people will remain in denial even after major catastrophic events.  They'll say, "Oh, that was just going to happen anyway becaue Earth changes."

We are the only species to ever exist on Earth with the ability to prevent their own extinction and yet some people seem hell bent on ensuring that happens.

I'm not against human extinction, I just think it's a great shame we would likely take 99%+ of all species with us, possibly preventing any chance of a civilization happening after our demise.

But our climate related deaths have continuously fallen throughout history as we've gained access to greater and greater supplies of cheap, plentiful energy, as we have more capacity to do work to mitigate the harshness of the environment the earth gave us, essentially we've continuously improved our environment with the use of fossil fuels.

So we're going to balance out how bad we make it against how well we mitigate against it?   Was 2012 a good film to you?

And you might be the only person on the planet who thinks we've continuously improved our environment.

I think he means our literal personal environment, not as a whole. For example, I currently live in a flat that when I'm home has the heating on allow me to sit comfortably without freeze to death because it's too cold and I don't live in a cave.

Hmm, pie.

Well yeah, that's what we've constantly done throughout history (an example being camp fires, which are toxic to us, but had greater benefit as it kept wild animals clear and helped cook food so there is less disease ridden food being eaten). And no 2012 was woeful, but I've yet to enjoy a disaster film such as that. And no I'm really not, our environment is the environment in which we live in, how on earth has that not improved for us, and if it wasn't, why are countries like India, and China, and Indonesia and so on desperately trying to recreated what happened in Europe and America? It's because our environment is significantly better and has helped add 40+ years to life expectancy with general health improving and environment related death decreasing dramatically (drought related deaths in the US and Europe are effectively nonexistant now, for example).

Oh sure.  But that's like saying we've got the cold (rhinovirus) under control because we now have Nyquil. Can we endure the problems better?  Yes.  Are the actual problems better?  No.

The big issue though is we aren't just making better Nyquil (personal living environments) but making the cold symptoms much worse (climate change).

Yeah but there's problems with the environment towards us at every temperature level, and historically we've proven to be much much more acquiped at surviving warmer conditions than colder conditions. I'm still failing to see how 'climate change' and AGW are making the symptoms worse. I've already shown how extreme weather events aren't increasing, and I've yet to see how the environment is becoming more hostile towards us, the warmer more CO2 rich environment lets us grow more food than ever before, it's becoming easier to live on the planet than ever before, even regardless of our technology that would improve our wellbeing anyway.

Well that's true but that's only the bright side of fossile fuels from an era where it's global impact where limited due to the quantities that was being used.

Too many cows.

It's so cold here that I'm sick since two weeks ago and no sign of end.
