One of the things I love and respect about Nintendo is their innovation and self respect. I can't imagine what it'd be like for the proud members of the board to suck it up and pay apple or who ever 30% of their profits. Can you? I don't know what Playstation charges but given their tumultous past I can't imagine that would go well either.
What about the personal computer? Steam doesn't pay microsoft anything. Steam makes it's own peripherals. If worst came to worst (which it won't imo *Knocks on wood*) I can easily imagine Nintendo making a portal for Home Computers that lets you buy every game from a Nintendo platform, from first to 3rd party, and have it work with every future Nintendo peripheral. Just like Steam Link you could still play on your TV with new Nintendo hardware in your hands and all the profits go to Nintendo.
Despite your level of affinity to Steam, can you see how this benefits us?

Nintendo has strong enough IP and library for the company to not be in that desperate of a situation for a long time
remember Nintendo is far from in a bad spot economically. They actually have a lot of money in the bank (unlike the likes of Sony). If anything, down the road I see them attempting their own mobile dedicated or home computer dedicated device
it does seem in general gaming it sort of headed in a collision course with home computers, so I think its pretty obvious that if their video game dedicated systems do not fair better (at least the home versions) then they will just try and make a truly mixed device along the lines of a computer that can be comfortably used to browse the web and connect to televisions for gaming
obviously this sort of technology already sort of exists through streaming from one device to another, but I see more of a smaller device that can easily be moved to attach to a regular computer moniter or a TV, depending on use
we'll see though
they're doing fine with their toys and 3DS, and apparently are looking to be way more active with potentially TV/movies, amusement parks, licensing, etc. all they really need to knock out of the park now is their next home console. which, if they go back to a more traditional controller, shouldn't be hard
