The original Xbox actually went out of production in August of 2005 due to a bad business deal between Nvidia and MS. So its true live span was from 2001 to 2005.

I think the PS3 has a few more years while I can't see the Wii making past this year. |
The Wii stopped production in October of 2013 so technically its already dead.

Very interesting list. Of the console currently still going on, I don't expect the Wii U to last very much longer at this point. With the NX on the horizon and the general lack of success for the console I'd give it 2, maybe 3 years at most.
The Xbox One and PS4 on the other hand seem to be in it for the long run. It'll be interesting to see if they can match the longevity of their predecessors. Sony at least seems to be dedicated to support every one of their consoles for at least 10 years.
Interesting list

Very interesting, would be cool to see a similar list detailing how long official software was released for systems. Although it only lived 3 years before being discontinued, I think officially licensed Dreamcast software was released for about 9 years.

There were two different types. Those who insisted the ps3 would never die (think that was around when the believe thing was all over the site) and those who thought that it was the market lead, as opposed to the creators of the console, that determined longevity of the console.
It always seemed to come up in threads where Sony reps stated the PS3 was on a 10 year plan. I always stated the PS3 would be around for 10 years but not have a lot of support by the 10th year. Seems accurate enough. |
I remember people (including me) saying that the customer decided if a console lasted 10 years or not but I personally never implied the PS3 would die. I actually thought it would be optimized to the point where it competed with eighth gen consoles!
As for the Wii, speaking only for myself, I wanted a Wii HD or a successor sooner, rather than later. I was more than content with PS3 and 360 level performance.
But we see and remember different posts. We both are probably correct.
Never knew the NES lasted that long

For example: even if the NES was discontinued in 2003... it wasn't supported from Nintendo after 1994: http://www.gamefaqs.com/company/1143-nintendo?platform=41&year=0®ion=0&devpub=0 The last Nintendo-published NES-games were Wario's Woods, Megaman 6 and Zoda's Revenge in 1994. PS2 got its last retail release in 2014: http://venturebeat.com/2014/02/02/playing-the-last-playstation-2-game/

this.
the numbers are majorly flawed in the OP's list. if the console manufacturer was not making and publishing games for the system years and years forward then I don't think it really should count as 'running' then
I mean for gods sake if Nintendo essentially stopped manufacturing and developing for the NES in 1994 then its pretty absurd to take the 2003 or whatever number seriously for the death of the system. seems more like 1995 would be roughly accurate
the SNES figure also seems strange considering Nintendo did not support the system anywhere near that long
if these years are simply based on some stores having the systems for sale in random obscure parts of the world that late in the game then that doesn't really count as 'running'
I mean there could be a random giant store that overpurchased consoles and has them fo sale and will never run out but it doesn't magically mean the system is still technically active
People need to accept what the list is. Years the console was manufactured. Nobody is helping by bitching, you're just bringing the thread down. If people feel the dates are wrong, help me out with sources and I can adjust otherwise can you talk about what the thread is about. If you want a list of years games released on a console, go make one because this isn't about that. If you feel data is wrong, do a little research first before bringing thread down, give me the sources and help correct the data.
Thank you.

Well I already pointed out earlier that the original X-Box went out of production in August 2005 plus the Wii went out of proudction in 2013 although it looks like the Wii Mini might still be in production.
