Forums - Politics Discussion - Netflix will block the use of proxies for geo-restricted content in the ‘coming weeks’

- Netflix content varies from region to region

- people have been circumventing region-resticted content by using proxies and VPN

- Netflix announces that they are on a mission to stop that from happening in order to protect global licensing

- David Fullagar, vice president of content delivery architecture at Netflix, said in a blog post:

“In coming weeks, those using proxies and unblockers will only be able to access the service in the country where they currently are,”

- comment may come as a surprise to some as Netflix has expressed the impossibility of completelt restricting content by region

- for example, earlier this week Netflix chief product officer Neil Hunt said:

"We do apply industry standard technologies to limit the use of proxies. Since the goal of the proxy guys is to hide the source it’s not obvious how to make that work well. It’s likely to always be a cat-and-mouse game. [We] continue to rely on blacklists of VPN exit points maintained by companies that make it their job. Once [VPN providers] are on the blacklist, it’s trivial for them to move to a new IP address and evade."

Any victims of this in here?

Ehh, I stopped using Netflix a long time ago.

Now I have less reason to use it.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

I just got the US Netflix back on my Wii U last night!

I guess I'll be back to using 1 Netflix instead of 2 :(

Netflix will lose subscribers in the UK if they are successful.

i always thought uk offers are nearly as good, as us

this is sad news. i will cancel my subscription.

I don't use a VPN. I was considering it when I was using popcorn time. Why bother using that with netflix?

Not a big fan of Netflix anymore...

I had netflix in the uk, then moved to France when it was not available, so used a proxy. It does not interest me if I can't see other countries catalogue, and I will cancel my subscription.

Well there goes their symbol as free market enterpreuneship

Do they understand how proxies and VPN's work?

The only way I can think of to truly make this work is to associate content with the country your subscription is billed from.

They said something about "evolving' measures to counter this:

However, Fullager refers to “evolving” measures used to tackle the practice of viewing geo-restricted content. “We employ the same or similar measures other firms do,” he said. “The technology continues to evolve and we are evolving with it.”

You hear that? It's the sound of a million people googling how to pirate movies.
