I think that they will, since the justification for not doing it in the first time was the lack of new hardware being revealed.

What you just said.

If you go far back to the announcment on 2013 of not having a press conference, you will see mention of something on those lines:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/04/25/no-nintendo-press-conference-at-e3-2013

Iwata: "At E3 this year, we are not planning to launch new hardware, and our main activity at E3 will be to announce and have people experience our software. Many people are certainly very interested in learning more about the Wii U titles that we are going to announce. We will use E3 as an ideal opportunity to talk in detail mainly about the Wii U titles that we are going to launch this year, and we also plan to make it possible for visitors to try the games immediately. As a brand new challenge, we are working to establish a new presentation style for E3."

"Hardware design isn’t about making the most powerful thing you can.
Today most hardware design is left to other companies, but when you make hardware without taking into account the needs of the eventual software developers, you end up with bloated hardware full of pointless excess. From the outset one must consider design from both a hardware and software perspective."

Assuming this line of thinking is still current at Nintnedo, then this basically confirms that Nintendo will do a live conference this year.

I hope so. I like seeing nintendo on stage

They need to do a live event for the NX reveal. Also, I just want the glory of E3 2014 back. They definitely should do a NWC with Mario Maker speedruns and Splatoon, Smash, Mario Kart tournaments, etc.

I still think NX is coming out 2017 as I have predicted all along, but if it came out holiday this year, I'd be OK with that, but that will most certainly guarantee Zelda is dual-platform OR that the NX is backward compatible.

I personally don't think Nintendo has a choice in this matter if they want the NX to succeed. They need to get this thing out into the eyes of everyone. That includes the press who are far more likely to report and deliver news on the NX if it's a press conference. The Nintendo Directs appeal more to the Nintendo fans are hardcore gamers. News papers like the New York Times and Huffington Post will post that stuff in their papers and you'll see it on the news if it's mind blowing enough. The NX will go noticed with press and people will know about it. Unless Nintendo just wants Kotaku, IGN, Gamespot, and EB Games/Gamestop to advertise the NX in advance. They really don't have a choice unless they are so limited in supply that they only want to sell the system to Nintendo fans and hardcore gamers. Sure the digital events are fun for gamers, but from a business perspective. It doesn't make any sense. Directs should be left for the little news. I miss all very special magical moments that Nintendo provided to E3, like the Zelda orchestra, Miyamoto coming on stage with the master sword, Reggie kicking ass and taken names. Oh god the amazing times Nintendo had and the memes that followed. Except for 2008.... that never happened 0.0

You may be right here. It does seem that the live press conferences get more coverage from the mainstream media than the digital events do. Which is somewhat odd since it seems that the digital events get more buzz on social media. Anyway, they probably should do a live conference for the NX unveiling, even though I still think they could get their message across in a digital event.

I agree with you. I have noticed that the Directs send a shockwave across the internet in social media. It's quite interesting to see this contrast and I can see why Nintendo likes that method. But on the flip side. Most of the people in this crowd are at least aware of the NX in some shape or form. In reality, a lot of gamers I've talked to in person have absolutely no clue what the NX is and ask of me to tell them more about it.

I would also be very much a fan of the idea that teigaga proposed. Have a conference fully dedicated to the NX. It's concept, release date, software, why we should invest in it, and even some more details on the hardware itself this time around. A Nintendo Direct would be a great way to communicate with the current Wii U and 3DS crowd with games that would make them want to continue investing in that system along with the NX. The Wii U does not appeal to a lot of the people who does not currently own one, and Nintendo needs to try and capture this crowd with the NX without the distractions of the other platforms.

What's the point? No one actually goes to E3, everyone watches online.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I was wondering this these days. Wouldn't it be strange to unveil a console at a digital event? I don't know man... I'm totally fine with their new format, but for a console reveal they should really do a live conference, which is why they won't do it. :P

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Hoping for a reveal of the 2017 NX, press conference would be cool but since it's nintendo you never know. They will probably make some fun event that's more focused on consumers than on industry partners since that's what they need right now.

I have no idea how they are going to tackle the reveal of the NX. They will most likely do a separate conference from E3 and go more into it at E3 with games and demos.

Major Press Conference!
