Forums - Sony - Palmer Luckey; PSVR not as "high end" as Rift.

Which VR headset do you plan on buying?

Oculus Rift 13 4.13%

HTC Vive 9 2.86%

PSVR 197 62.54%

Undecided but will probably buy one 31 9.84%

Undecided but probably won't buy one 13 4.13%

Won't be buying a VR headset 52 16.51%

Total:315

Rift also comes with a controller and games adding to the cost.

Can't disagree with Luckey, even though he does represent Oculus.

Between the specs of the device and the upper end hardware required to use it, that alone should make it pretty clear. Add the enthusiast $600 price and it's obvious which market they're selling to.

The PS4, on the other hand, is a mass consumer priced device and it should be expected to see the PSVR priced accordingly based upon the specs and the proprietary ecosystem for which it is being utilized. I would be shocked if SCE priced it above the cost of the PS4 itself, making a $299 price tag probable.

At $299, you're still selling to a limited niche within the PS4 consumer user base, but it does represent quite the bargain to the enthusiast interested in jumping into VR entertainment when you add the relative low cost of the PS4 itself.

So basically Rift=3DO and PSVR=SNES.

PSVR if it comes in at 400 is a great deal and I am convinced will sell more than the Rift. However Oculus is on the bleeding edge of the VR market so is Vive. And I think due to the open nature of the PC and the additional hardware power of the PC will deliever the more interesting experiences.

Occulus Rift creator, huh?

Eh -- this is only partially true. The OR has a screen per eye and at a resolution that's about 12% higher.

However, the OR also is a peripheral device for the PC rather than an actual platform. They make ALL their money on hardware sales and therefore OR will run with higher margins (same problem with Steam Box).

The PSVR will be probably be $299-399 vs OR @ $599. It will be $100 cheaper off the git go, just because of the platform royalties Sony expects to recoup on software. An additional $100-200 will be based on actual components (Sony can buy components cheaper too.... don't forget they are a longtime hardware manufacturer).

Sony will only get more royalties if they sell to people who otherwise weren't going to purchase a ps4.  I already have a ps4, I already buy many games for it and i already pay for psn plus. Once I buy a PSVR (which i plan to pre-order) I'm not likely going to start spending more money on games then i was before. I already buy plenty.  I'll just be more selective when purchasing non vr games then before becuase I'll be buying vr games as well. With Oculus all the money they make off selling games in their store is new money.

It doesn't matter if someone buys the game just for the PS4 or buys it for the PSVR -- they get platform royalties. If they sell the hardware at cost -- it will be a net win either way.  Keep in mind that Sony pictures will start producing VR experiences in addition to the actual games soon enough.

If they establish a foothold in VR (and its successful) they can have another leg up on both Xbox and Nintendo), and if they can beat the competition this could be a nother bluray vs HDDVD situation.

Yeah... unlike these idiots at Rift, Sony has actually been witness to over 20 years of other companies failings. Hell, even THEY fucked up with the $600.00 PS3 launch price. There's no way in hell they're stupid enough to do it again.

Did you actually say something in Sony's favor? Wow....
