So what? How is selling 1.2M a total mess up? Are we changing the meaning of what a total mess up is? The Virtual Boy was a total mess up. This is competition at it's finest. Maybe not finest but still

When did I ever say 1.2 million is a mess up? Those are good numbers, but the PS4 did 1/4 more, which is quite a bit. It also means much of the gap closed last year is gone.

Come on man. You are indirectly saying it by bringing up what the PS4 sold. It didn't sell more than PS so 1.2 is a total mess up is what I'm  getting from your thread.

Of course I am. Say what you like, but the XB1 is in competition with the PS4. So yes, they should be compared, especially in the US. I found Microsoft provided little effort in competing compared to last year, and almost handed it away.

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

To be fair, I don't think MS was trying to "win" the holidays but just turn a decent profit. Can't fault them for that. MS understands that the PS4 won the gen so the only thing they can really do is just make money off the xbox one and build up the brand for next gen.

But they cut the price to 299, meaning they didnt profit for a whole month. So that strategy was gone as well.

They would of took more losses if they did a price cut to beat the PS4's price or if they had too good of bundles. I'm sure if they did take any loss or got no profit, that they'll make money off of the sales off of games and online subscription from the consoles sold. It's still a wiser strategy than trying to beat the PS4 in sales while taking more heavy losses on each sale.

Microsoft strategy may have worked. It sure could have been worse. There was no chance we were going to have a repeat of last year. The first firesale always sells the most. That card was played.

I think they held their own quite well considering...though I think the Tomb Raider debacle is going to come with some consequences.

I think we can nit pick Sony, MS, and Nintendo for how they handled the holidays.

Bottom line, MS had strong holiday sales and offered notable exclusives. I hope next holiday is at par.

No, we can't. Look, I'm an Xbox fanboy. But Sony played it out well, allowing to be profitable and be the best selling. There's nothing to nitpick. Nintendo could have something to it, but they did well for what they had. Microsoft could've done far better, and they blew it. I agree, I hope the next holiday is on par or better for the XB1 (in NA), but there's no denying Microsoft slacked it.

You could also argue if Sony had more notable content this holiday it would have had an even strong holiday. They had to cut down to $299 in fear of losing more sales to Xbox.

Sony is the market leader but people still buy Xbox because Sony lacks something MS is doing.

In a nutshell, you're arguing Sony had the best sales so they did everything right. I'm saying Xbox still managed to have a great holiday because of what Sony lacks. Wii U was basically forgotten because... obvious reasons.

Wrong, Xbox sells on brand vs anything else in the U.S, the 360 really erupted Xbox as a major gaming brand(almost the gaming brand for a while too)..... So lots of 360 guys are jumping to xone because of brand recognition.... Sony is doing everything, and I mean everything better than Microsoft this gen..... So it isn't because sony is missing something that Xbox continues to sell

If that was true I would own PS4 right now. The sole reason I don't own a PS4 right now is its lack of exclusives I care about (I'm not a Dark Soul's fan btw). If Sony was doing everything right than X1 wouldn't be doing as well as it is. Brand recognition didn't do Wii U or Vita much favors. I bought a WIi U this holiday because it has exclusives I really wanted.

I think you're giving MS less credit than deserved.

About competing with PS4: I play on Xbox One and would like to see Xbox One doing better, but I can't just ignore the fact that it's outselling Xbox 360 (at the same point on lifecycles). That's a good sign. On the other side, Sony has proven that if they do almost everything right with a console, it'll be a monster. PlayStation is way bigger than Xbox worldwide. I think we can say there's no competition in Europe and Asia.

Another point: while Xbox was outsold by PS4 in November and December, Microsoft's strategy worked well. They had the second best Black Friday in Xbox history. I think that delivering great exclusives (which Microsoft is doing) is a better strategy than desperately fighting for market share. There's no need for that.

Brand recognition + most third parties are multiplat..... But they all look/run better on PS..... I don't see a reason beyond halo to be an Xbox only guy..... Unless you are okay W playing third party games(which is fine) that are not on par with ps

People want a fight. They want a close battle where their champion comes out on top. Well it's not going to happen this gen. The people chose PS4. It's the "John Cena" of gaming consoles.

M$ didn't win and no matter what happens, M$ will never win. All we Xbox One lovers can do is enjoy our consoles and celebrate the small victories. Sony won the holidays. They'll win every holiday but Xbox had a good showing, got some good games, and some good services. That's good enough. No point in even comparing PlayStation 4 at this point. It's not 7th gen anymore.

This. There's simply NO competition anymore. Maybe next time.
