lame "updates message".
Basically says nothing at all... why even bother then?

Long-term, rushing the launch would be a bad move. Ninty may very well release the NX next year, but it wouldn't be the wise decision. Wii U's failure might be partially attributed to a rushed launch. Many of the ports were of sub-par quality, third parties had little invested in the system overall when their first wave of games failed (they left), and even Nintendo struggled to keep a steady flow of software throughout the first year. No reason to repeat history so soon. Sega Saturn, part III. |
Wii U's failures go beyond any launch issues in fact the launch was fine it was what happened after that was the problem, the console was barely advertised, the name caused confusion among consumers and the price point was not competitive. The first year of all 3 current consoles weren't great in fact the Wii U had the better first year line up of the 3 but the mentioned problems stopped any momentum.
Rewind back to the 3DS Nintendo made big moves with in months to fix the problem but with the Wii U no move was made, it's the only Nintendo console to not even get a price cut in the amount of time it's been out.
Tell me how releasing it after 2016 would be a wise move because I don't see any indication how it could be, Wii U's last selection of known games will be out next year, after that momentum will cease for the console and all focus in gaming will be on the competitors so NX will have to arrive as the is still momentum going. They're not going to keep a platform secret, announce it next year then release it a year later giving competitors a chance to prepare, all signs point to 2016.
This is actually what i found most interesting
"Nintendo will continue to flexibly transform itself by adapting to changing times while constantly valuing the spirit of originality based on the belief that the “true value of entertainment lies in its uniqueness” - and will continue to provide products and services that people will be surprised and delighted by."
Does this mean they will actually release real content on other platforms? Or does it have more to do by selling toys and IP licenses for series and movies?
"With the belief in our mission to put smiles on people’s faces around the world through products and services, we have followed our basic strategy of expanding the gaming population by offering products that can be enjoyed by everyone regardless of age, gender or gaming experience. We now want to take this mission a step further by increasing the number of people who have access to Nintendo’s intellectual property (Nintendo IP)."

Nintendo will definitely aim for profits + making the system affordable, so the earlier it releases, the worse we can expect in terms of tech specs. Waiting until '17 will give nintendo better options in terms of tech and power efficiency, but not sure if they want to wait that long with current floundering sales. For Zelda U Nintendo can replicate TLOU, making it a timed exclusive for with the superior NX version launching 1 yr later.
Personally, I'm hoping for '17 launch to get the best tech possible from frugal Ninty. Its clear PS4/XB1 will be around for a long time, as unlike the last gen, this is only a 2 horse race with long lives ahead, and we shouldn't expect new consoles from them until 2020 or '19 at the earliest.
Nintendo does not need to rush unless their investors are upset or business is so low that they have no choice but to launch in '16. If their mobile games launch in '16, along with Wii U last hurrah via Zelda and Star fox, it will be wise to wait until '17 for a strong NX launch + best tech possible.

It certainly has to do something with the latter. They've talked time and time again about how they want to start increasing the number of people who are aware of their IPs with the help of theme parks, movies, TV shows, etc..

Unless Nintendo goes third party, I don't see their core software releasing on other platforms. The president said this:
For our dedicated video game platform business, Nintendo is currently developing a gaming platform codenamed “NX” with a brand-new concept and our unique software-led hardware-software integrated business will continue to constitute the core business for Nintendo.
Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:
