Forums - Movies & TV - Avatar 2 = $3 Billion. Here is Why.

Avatar one had the novelty factor going for it, it was a visual spetacle like never seen before, 2 wont have that. Also the movie itself wasnt so great it created a whole generation of ppl who idolises it (like most of the movies you showed on the OP did) Its very different from what is happening to Star Wars now (tbh whats happening to Star Wars right now is umprecedented and completly crazy).

Nope, no movie will pass the 3 Billions in BO at this points.
Star Wars VII might pass Jurassic World, but it won't ever beat Avatar in Box Office.

Its still early but Ep VII is tracking to go well beyond Avatar right now, it has been having the same kind of legs avatar had, however it started from 120 millions day 1, while Avatar started from 40 millions. The fact that Force Awakens is already outpacing Jurassic World by 100 millions without even having a second weakend on the box office yet is pretty bonkers. Its very likely itll make well over 1 billion on USA alone.

Highly doubtful. The first one was big because everyone was curious about the 3D. The movie itself wasn't recieved very well and is probably forgotten about by most, just look at it's mediocre IMDb score (and IMDb is usually actually fairly reliable on this). I'd say it should be content with it's performance if it gets to half of the original.

2.8 billion, actually. And I disagree with you. Sure, it has a LOT to do with it but if that was the case Avatar wouldn't have sold miraculously on home video.

Well I was one of the people who missed it in 3d and bought it on blurry to see what all the fuss was about. And failed to see what all the fuss was about besides for the pretty visuals at 1080p, my first tru HD film. Visuals were amazing. Movie was very forgettable.

Nice try, bro!

You know why I don't believe you? Of course you do! Because "A" there's netflix and "B" you could have just rented it out first instead of buying and then last but not least, "C", borrow it from someone. ANYONE! Hell, there can even be a "D" option...buy it used.

There are people here who are saying no one cares about Avatar 2, but speaking for myself, even without any teasers yet it is easily my most anticipated movie of the last few years, and I am a huge fan of the original. I can also see I am not alone here.

Something about some people on gaming forums, why so much hate for Avatar? It's like people get possessed by the Rage virus, and it makes them nuts.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

You are seriously comparing the nostalgic effects of franchises such as Star Wars or Jurassic to Avatar? A movie that most people went to see for its visuals and 'perfect storm world event' impact? Avatar 2 won't even match the original's unadjusted gross, let alone make 3 billion. Most people who have seen Avatar do not want a sequel.

I think your underestimating Cameron as a director by saying it has no chance.  T2 is pretty much the best sequel ever and one of the most success sequels also.  If Avatar 2 comes close to improving upon the first movie like T2 did with the first Terminator movie there is actually a pretty good chance of it making $3 billion.

I think you might be overestimating him. I don't even see how the success of Terminator 2 can help you see Avatar 2 making the amount of cash you're expecting it to do. First of all, T2 is like the ONLY sequel Cameron has ever done, and it was 25 years ago. Secondly, Terminator and Avatar are 2 very , very different things. T2 was an R rated quality blockbuster, which at the time, landed in a market in dire need of such movies. Avatar 2 is Cameron's desire to create an universe that leaves its mark on the industry forever before he retires, and he acts upon this solely based on Avatar's incredible success. It is a forced and unnecessary sequel, but I guess we'll have to wait and see the drops for ourselves.

Nobody is saying that no one cares about Avatar 2. Quite the opposite, I recognize it will be a huge movie, but not at the level some people are expecting. Jurassic World numbers sound about right at this very moment, in my opinion. But we shall wait and see.

I need a glimpse of it first. More of the same will not get it to 2bn

Amen.

I don't see how not expecting this thing to reach the numbers of the original is "hating", but I guess that's just the internet only dealing in extremes.

Avatar is Nintendo Wii.
Avatar 2 is Nintendo Wii U.
