They already lost to Smart Phones. Next question.

Comparing dedicated handhelds to smartphones/tablets is the equivalent of comparing consoles to PC/laptops.

Yes and comparing console games sales to Steam sales + Usage of PC games not on steam such as World of Warcraft, other MMORPGS and Farmville is incredibly valid, so thank you for your support :D.   The fact is that the handheld market is now ~92% on Phones, so ignoring it is possibly the most idiotic thing one could do while talking about portable gaming.

Fixed. ;)

WuT?

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

If we are going to include all the games on smartphones when comparing them to Nintendo handheld platforms, we should compare every game on PC to individual consoles, including very popular ones that aren't on steam, like World of Warcraft, Farmville, and others. We will find that consoles lost to PC and are dieing, by the same logic.

If u want to compare sales of specific or similar games than that makes sense but to compare overall hardware sales of smartphones/tablets to dedicated gaming handhelds makes no sense just like comparing game console hardware sales to PC/laptop hardware sales makes no sense.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

LOL not really my friend, not really at all.  Over time the console:PC ratio has remained fairly constant, at least in comparison to the Phone:Handheld ratio.

For Consoles to be "Losing" their marketsize and profit would have to be going down over time - and its not.  On the other hand the handheld market has been shrinking drastically for a long time.

Not if we consider the whole history of PC's vs. home consoles since the 1980's. Smartphones are a new item, relatively. Of course they are going to cut into the handheld market initially. Just as home consoles cut into the PC market when they became big. It doesn't mean handhelds are going to die. There is a large niche that smartphone games do not address. Otherwise 70+ million people wouldn't buy a 3DS.

Also PC gaming has gained marketshare over the last ten years, surpassing consoles.

Costs have risen on consoles, while arguably costs have not on PC due to everything being purely digital. This implies profits are decreasing on consoles and increasing on PC.

Since Sony won't make a Vita 2 (and even if they did, the chance of it selling well is very slim because nobody would want to risk buying another one after Sony just ditched the Vita the first second they could) And if you don't count mobiles, then yes.
