Forums - Sony - PlayStation Exec Defends PS2-on-PS4 Price Points

Don't get me started I'm still mad at Sony for not upgrading all my VHS tapes to blu-Ray for free. Those bastards.

I feel like Sony are testing the limits of what they can actually get away with. Nintendo has done this too.

They would rather get that extra few $ instead of keep fans happy.

I feel like i have been buying FF7 for every generation since it's release.

The price tag of 15 euro's for Rogue Galaxy seems a bit steep to me. I do however feel like playing the game again. I'd say 10 euro's would be a nice offer to jump in on any ps2 game i know is gonna give me a good time.
Despite the fact that I already have bought them years ago and someone is actually ripping me off. Unless i am the only one making use of the games' new features though. It's like paying administration fees at Ticketmaster per ticket.
Anyway, after finishing DQ Heroes and FF7 I'll probably end up buying some Jrpg goodness like Rogue Galaxy.

If you still have the psone disks of FF7 those work 100% in the ps2 and ps3, heck if you have a ps3 you can even play FF7 on both the psp/Vita as long as you're on the same wi-fi network as the ps3, just chuck the disks in it and remote play from the psp/vita.

Not sure why you've been rebuying the game on the last gens... especially the ps2, since, well that would just take the psone disks again haha.

I phrased 'i feel' with the sole purpose of that ps2 option in mind. And of course you are right about the options on ps3 and psp. That being said, yes i bought the psn ff7 for ps3 because that gave me a reason to sell my Psone collection.  Which contained platinum and original versions of several games including FF7. Of which I bought one surely during the Ps2 era. ;p

Of course a decision i now and then regret.

Think the white original disk version of FF7 goes for a good amount now on ebay, I sadly had my original copy of the game stolen from me, now have a platinum box version (which does have that fmv disk from ff8 with the dance scene on it and the edited intro) but yeah woulda loved to have the original disks still, I did also buy a psn version of it last gen just for the ease of having it on the Vita while not tethered to my ps3 tho, figured the price was worth the convience there.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

Xbox 360 games are still in retail channel, that means developers can still make profit off of a sale.

Playstation 2 games are not..so its already a 2nd hand game by point of no pressed disc sales for developers.

The ps2 remasters made for the PS3 was development for the ps3 processor not the PS4.

Thus the game once again has to be recoded again, thus another license fee for Sony..you think a developer or publisher IP holder would allow the other publisher to do such without getting a license fee for their own software going to another platform? The PS4 is another platform, thus a licensed fee would in all likelihood be levied again for the copyright and or privileged IP holder.

Top it off, Sony would again have to recode the remaster that was made for the PS3 to now the PS4 anyway yet again..

And gamers think it should be free? Or that it does not cost Sony that much..lmao

Why dont you own a PS2.

I don't want to lug another console around as a transient student in addition to my Wii U, PC, PS3, and future PS4. Out of the four PS2's I've owned only one works, and it barely works at that (need to restart discs multiple times.) It also happens to be my phat model.

So you have a PS3 ... but bought the non BC version -- then proceed to bitch about the PS4 BC?

You also complain about having to haul around all those devices... but willingly haul around a library of ancient physical media?

I honestly don't see the issue with these prices but that may be because I don't care that much about a game's age. I've happily shelled out €7 for GBA titles because I think games like M&L Superstar Saga, Aria of Sorrow and Advance Wars are great games well worth the asking price. €10 for Donkey Kong 64 and Super Mario 64? Ka-ching. €10, that's about what some current gen games have cost me and if I have any regrets it's not because of those N64 titles.

If I had a PS4 I'd pay €15 for Final Fantasy XII and Valkyrie Profile 2 without blinking.

It's not about buying old games for 10€ or 15€, it's about having to pay for the same game twice or, if you're even more loyal to the company, three times.

Yeah...I really don't get that logic. You're buying it three times for three different systems.

It's a shitty customer service, especially when the competition does it better. Simple as that. On top of that a "PS3 version" of a PS2 game is just an 1:1 emulation, so you basically paid a fee to play the exact same game you already had. Now on PS4 you get a little upgrade, but I bet most customers would've rather taken the option to use full backwards compatibility with all their PS2 games with no extra cost, than having to buy an extremely limited amount of slightly upgraded games they already possess.

Also your own Blu-Ray comparison fails as Blu-Ray players can play DVDs, so you don't need to get the Blu-Ray version of a movie (whether it should be free or not).

So wouldnt it be fair to say just buy a ps2 then to play your old games?

I mean, if being able to play games from two gens ago on your new systems (for free) is your determination on getting a console, then I mean why aren't you just gaming on pc?

They've added a trophies and upscaled games? Means they are putting work into these games. $10 seems fair. I'll purchase FF12 if it comes out on it. I already have the other PS2 games I want on PS2.

Hmm, pie.

Actually I originally had a 20GB PS3 with full hardware backwards compatibility, it broke like almost every Sony console does. This is my third PS3. You can only really depend on the current gen system working with Microsoft and Sony, they are that bad with making their platforms last the test of time. Hopefully with common components and X86 architecture this is no longer an issue. And no my library is not with me currently (I have it digital on my PC for emulation, which I was hoping Sony would surpass and make better.) But game installs have been a standard for almost a decade now. Sony could always support installs off the original discs, and therefore you don't need to carry your library with you. But even if I did carry my library with me, that doesn't take away from the point that you would have to carry the library AND another console. The issue is still not resolved. It just makes it even more urgent.

No thanks Sony. Won't support it when the competition does it right. I love the PS2 but won't support the greed like that.

Which competition is doing it right? Can't think of any systems with backwards compatibility from gen before last. And pretty certain Nintendo were expecting pretty similar prices for N64 games on Virtual Console.

If this is a jab at Microsoft, then it's even more ironic, since X360 is a PowerPC system, so porting OG Xbox games to the One is easier. Players just don't care for that one...
