Forums - Gaming - The Ads are out of hand

I'm gonna put this out there first and say I know how important the ads are to the website. Without them, we wouldn't have this site (and on rate occasion they actually have a bit of relevancy toward me.

However, they have gotten to a point where I'm considering putting it on my Adblock list.I've left it in the past because it was just normal banners... But now it's flash banners. And video ads. I'm not going to do this if you guys don't knock it off.

I absolutely hate video ads. It's why my adblocker has gone on even on sites I'd like to support with ad revenue. They are unnecessary, and sometimes they still force through audio despite the fact that they should play muted unless clicked on. To make it worse, they tend to be flash based, which is a god damn abomination. There are sites where I had to force close the flash player plugin because their stupid video ads caused flash player to memory leak.

Having browsed this site on mobile, I can safely say the ads are not absolutely terrible there since at least flash ads can't function, but they're still a bit heavy. Ad control is very important towards convincing people that your site is worth supporting. If you freak out and enable ads in basically every empty spot of your layout, all you're going to do is lower your revenue as people get fed up and start exploring ad blocking options.

I can't even run the site without the ads slowing down my BRAND NEW PC. I don't mind the one frame ads but the videos that use sound files are a nuisance, especially on a smartphone where it tries to eat up data that you don't want it to eat. I hate to say it but until the ads die down a bit, us an adblocker.

Part of the reason I refuse to stop using AdBlock.

Thank god AdBlock exists.

Seriously though, it'd be nice for sites to properly integrate ads without being so intrusive.

I'm on mac, using safari and have adblock on. I didn't even KNOW there were ads on this site because I haven't seen any in years lol. You should get it.

This site forced me to get Adblock. Never had it before. Computer couldn't take it anymore and neither could I.

This site was borderline unusable on mobile due to the crazy ads, but then I turned off Javascript, and that basically killed all the bad ads. Unfortunately, it also killed the ability to post with quotes or anything other than just straight text. I re-enabled Javascript recently and the ads seem to have calmed the fuck down, but occasionally I'll still get a banner covering up the text form when commenting.

I can barely type in a comment here without serious lag. It takes me several minutes just to post. The ads are probably more important to this site than we are, so what can you do...?

It's pretty bad. I would never browse this site without adblock because the ads are to abrasive. It's like someone is trying to milk the users dry for additional revenue. Often the ads are completely unrelated to gaming and it's borderline rude.
