Forums - Nintendo - Itagaki: Devil's Third is getting criticized because it's innovative

I am really baffled at how vehemently people defend this game.

What am I missing here? What little I played had a choppy framerate, unresponsive controls that made aiming a chore, Uwe Boll calibre characters/VA/storytelling, graphics that wouldn't look out of place in a PS3/360 launch title, shallow combat mechanics...

I don't get it, I really don't. What do you guys see in it?

some people like to lie to themselves, especially if they dropped 50+ on a game, they not about to admit they got bamboozled

Some people feel the need to defend something that they have invested, and they can even convince themself that it is good. Otherwise they will have buyer's remorse.

I have not played Devil's Third, so I cannot defend or criticise it. However, I will likely buy it on the cheap so I can play it with some friends over a few drinks for a laugh.

I have bought some terrible games, and I have personally ridiculed such games. The buyer's remorse denial does not take hold of everyone, as different people can react to different situation in differing ways. Also, some people may actually genuinely like the game. Some people simply have different tastes. Some people also get a kick out of torturing themselves. To this day I cannot fathom what people see in Final Fantasy XIII. The thought of playing that game gives me anxiety.

He seems to have the ego of kanye west, not understanding why the game is bad because he made it.

Why would you watch the entire campaign of a game you don't like? Why waste so many hours?

Yrp, pioneers are always crucified. Just look at all the crap Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Super Mario Bros, Metal Gear Solid, and Metroid Prime took. Oh wait...

XDDDDDDD. What's innovative about Devil's Third exactly?

Fusion of FPS and hack'n'slash mechanics + interesting boss fights + unusual setting. Devil's Third is unique, you cannot confuse it with any modern fps game.

Sure, let's forget all the other games with FPS + TPS perspectives, a mix of shooter + hack'n'slash mechanics and interesting boss fights of the last 15 years... Jedi Outcast from early 2002 for example:

He's right though, it's really innovative to release a 2005 game in 2015.

Is it, though? I mean if indie developers have been releasing 1990 games in 2015, 2005 isn't that innovative.

Jokes aside, I don't get how if you make a 16-bit game, you get a free pass, but 2005 graphics are a big no-no. Not defending Devil's Third. Just an observation.

It was horrible to play, but it was kind of morbidly interesting to watch, in the same way as one of those utterly awful movies like The Room where you watch them just to laugh and facepalm at how shit they are.
