Some people feel the need to defend something that they have invested, and they can even convince themself that it is good. Otherwise they will have buyer's remorse.
I have not played Devil's Third, so I cannot defend or criticise it. However, I will likely buy it on the cheap so I can play it with some friends over a few drinks for a laugh.
I have bought some terrible games, and I have personally ridiculed such games. The buyer's remorse denial does not take hold of everyone, as different people can react to different situation in differing ways. Also, some people may actually genuinely like the game. Some people simply have different tastes. Some people also get a kick out of torturing themselves. To this day I cannot fathom what people see in Final Fantasy XIII. The thought of playing that game gives me anxiety.
