The first part is for those who don't know about iPod Touch
The iPod touch adds the graphical user interfaces Cover Flow and Multi-Touch to the iPod line and is available with 8, 16 or 32 GB of flash memory. It includes Apple's Safari web browser and is the first iPod enabling wireless access to the iTunes Store. Beginning in June, the iPod touch will also have access to the App Store.[3]The iPod touch has the iPhone's multi-touch interface, with a physical home button off the touch screen. The home screen has a list of buttons for the available applications which include Music, Videos, Photos, iTunes, Safari, YouTube, Mail, Maps and Widgets. Software upgrades sold by Apple expand the iPod touch's functionality by adding more features. It also has wifi.Comparisons to the iPhone
The iPod touch is slimmer and lighter than the iPhone. Unlike the iPhone, the iPod touch lacks a phone, internal speakers, camera, physical buttons for volume control, the silver chrome frame, and Bluetooth capability. The iPod touch uses software-based volume controls, which require users to double-tap the home button, bringing up an on-screen slider. At least one critic has suggested that Apple may have purposely left out these hardware features in order to differentiate the iPod touch from its more expensive cousin, or to add these features in later releases to obtain more sales. Others say that the iPod touch does not require the aforementioned features because it is fundamentally an iPod and not a mobile phone.
The iPhone has sold over 5 million units.

Yes those figures include all forms of ipod including the mini, nano.
I think people saying gaming on the iPod will be only as popular as the N-Gage are wrong. The N-gage has only sold a little over 3 million copies. Why is it so hard to believe that the device people use for music/tv shows/movie/portable internet will not enjoy any success in gaming. Do I think it will be as popular as the ds or psp as far as games go? Hell no. As for the argument that the iPhone is a gimmick OK, but the iPod line is proven and the iPod touch will do fine. (Note the iPod line is seperate from the iPhone).
Bottom line we're not talking about a device that is going to rely on gaming for sales at all. We're talking about a device which people are going to buy with or without games. And if you already have it why wouldn't you get a game for it? Everyone I know has those crapy phone game on there phone. People want portable entertainment. If the price is right people will buy.
Edit: top part is from wikipedia
