Microsoft chops Xbox prices in half for the holidays

The software giant entices last-minute shoppers with a 17-day sale that will offer deep discounts on Xbox consoles, games, movies and TV shows.

Microsoft's huge Xbox sale will run until January 7, 2016.

Consumers looking for a new Xbox or the hottest games will be treated to a huge sale from Microsoft starting next week.

Running from December 22 through January 7, 2016, the Countdown sale will include both daily and weekly discounts on the Xbox One and Xbox 360 video game consoles as well as hundreds of games, TV shows and movies. The deals will be available worldwide via the Xbox Store.

Microsoft's goal is to nab last-minute holiday shoppers as well as those looking for bargains after Christmas is over. The Xbox One has generally played second fiddle to the Sony PlayStation 4 in terms of monthly sales. Over the past year, Microsoft has been able to boost Xbox One demand and play more competitively against the PS4 by cutting prices, bundling free games and offering other promotions.

The sale will shave up to 40 to 60 percent off the Xbox One and the Xbox 360. Microsoft has been busy pushing the Xbox One since it debuted two years ago with the latest sale offering $50 off the price of the console plus two free games. The Redmond, Washington-based company hasn't forgotten about the Xbox 360, which still draws in buyers looking for a less pricey and more basic console.

In the past, the Xbox One had been criticized for its lack of blockbuster titles. This year, Microsoft made a concerted effort to drum up a greater array of games as another way to lure in Xbox One buyers. The Countdown sale will offer discounts on such popular titles as Halo 5: Guardians, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Forza Motorsport 6, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Fallout 4 and Call of Duty: Black Ops III.

One major criticism initially thrown at the Xbox One was its lack of backward compatibility. Xbox 360 owners who bought an Xbox One were unable to play any of their existing games. But Microsoft corrected that limitation this year, so Xbox One owners can now play more than 100 games designed for the 360, with more being added on a regular basis. The Countdown sale promises discounted prices on more than 10 backward compatible games.

Microsoft has also tried to push the Xbox One as a full entertainment center rather than just a game console. Toward that end, the sale will cut prices on hundreds of movies and TV shows, including "Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation," "Kingsman: The Secret Service" and "Mad Max: Fury Road." During the sale, Xbox One owners will be able to check out free one-month trials of such apps as Sling TV, Crunchyroll and CBS All Access.

It is near the end of the end....

Whooa, this sounds significant.  This could definitely put the XOne on top for December NPD.

I almost wonder if this is a sign of Microsoft preparing to sell their gaming division by trying to boost XOne's install base as much as possible. I don't understand why you would want to take these kinds of losses when your console isn't doing that badly. I was expecting another $50.00 price-cut but this is insane. I am also not sure how practical it will be for Microsoft to raise the price again after this sale ends.

No way Xbox is on top for Dec npd..... The starwars ps4 bundle alone should destroy the charts.... I am expecting 2 mili for ps4 or close to for that month.....

I wouldnt get too excited, this will mainly be for software. There is no way they will drop 50% off the console price, and if they do it will be limited numbers like they did before.

I believe they have already lost december, they are just trying to not make it to much of a gap... i do not believe they can drop the price that much because next year it would be another terrible Jan sales.

Making an indie game : Dead of Day!

I somehow doubt there will be any further reduction in price on the actual console(s) themselves. Seems more like they're talking about software and accessories. Xbone will probably stay 299 during the period.

Yes, the deal for hardware is an extra 50$ gift card and a game (you get to pick from three games, all from last year). It's pretty much the same deal Target had for the XBO on Black Friday (XBO at 299$+60$ gift card). Article is misleading.

Xbox one will probably be 300 dollars for the rest of the year and next year.

40-60% cut from its current price? O_o

I agree, phil and the team are bringing the heat and this move should help them along with npd.

CNET misinterpreted - it's clearly for SW

If you actually check Major Nelson's site - they confirmed X1 for $300. No less than that.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016
