You pay for the service so yes, you should expect them to pro-actively build their network for new customers. And "M$", really? I work for a network company and know how you should build a network. Also, it doesn't matter if Sony is a "dedicated server company" - MS wasn't either but if you want to play with the big ones, behave like the big ones. Network cost analysis is something also Sony should be able to do.
And I don't forget day one patches but they come from download companies like Akamai and not from Sony servers.

I was just trying to cut Sony some slack...this is a point I make when it comes to talking up each system.
I doubt your network compnay has to deal with as many users as each of these two spread around the world dealing with a multitude of issues that can strike server farms and the variety of things their networks must do...all the while turning a decent enough profit to make their share holders happy...also on aging hardware that has to be upgraded and patched constantly...all the while being a huge target for no lifers with nothing better to do. I'm not saying they deserve a free pass but it is no where as simple as you want to make it seem. Also M$ still did pretty good keeping their network or parts of it up while being being attacked.
Edit: And as for patches...they have to que them through their respective networks before connecting to the publishers server for download...so this is still added traffic for all concerned.

I work for a webhosting company, one of the greatest in Europe. We have a lot of customers, I can assure you. But that's not what this is about. I didn't say it is simple for everyone out there but for networkers this is a task they should be able to do, no matter whether it's global or just continental. The problem itself you have to solve is basically the same, you only have to extrapolate.
And why would Sony queue patches, like at all? Every PS4 console should only make a connection to the CDN and not to Sony servers for big downloads because nothing else is required to do so, besides some proxying so that the console knows which file to get explicitely. But this should also be no problem for a company which demands money for their online service.
