Hacker claims PS4 Jailbreak is real, confirms RAM dumping & more

BY JOHAN ZIETSMAN - DECEMBER, 13TH 2015

A hacker who goes by the name of CTurt previously broke news of a working PS4 kernel exploit that had the potential to allow homebrew content to run on the console. Today, the hacker has also confirmed that the PS4 is now “officially” jailbroken through his kernel exploit

According to CTurt, the PS4 jailbreak allows the ability to dump system RAM from other processes. What this means in layman’s terms is that we’re likely to see a custom firmware for the console some time soon, with the ability to run homebrew content.

The hacker’s latest tweets can be seen below.

Based on reports, it appears that the existing hack only works on firmware 1.76, though CTurt claims that it could be made to work on higher firmware versions.

Of course, this could unfortunately also open the gates for piracy. As responsible gamers, we at Gearnuke condemn and discourage such activities.

bad news for Sony but i think its good news for certain consumers and console gaming as whole. A lot of none first world countries cant afford console gaming over PC gaming. This will make the purchase of a PS4 which can be overpriced in certain areas a lot more wothwhile.

I think this will further grow console gaming in the world and just imagine what you could install for homebrew software on PS4 with x86 architecture? You could easily emulate windows and play Starcraft 2 on your PS4 :) opinions?

I honestly hope Sony patches this ASAP because it'll only lead to people pirating games or cheating in online games... Just use a PC if you want to run homebrew.

It is already patched. It uses the old webkit hack way back from Firmware 1.76 (which is also the reason it's only working with that one). However, it could lead to something new, we'll see.

PS3 was jailbroken too. What happened there? Nothing.

Jailbreak the Vita. Then we can talk!

Every console ever ends up being jailbroken. It's a natural thing to happen to any piece of hardware. Considering how much online centric are modern systems, Sony should not be too worried about this. Good news for those that don't care for online at all, though.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

The sale will go up like insane because of this. Only console. ;P

Reminds me of the PSP days of homebrew, some was good and some bad. Sony will probably want to patch it asap and prevent it from happening.

Also you could just play SC II on PC, the platform it has it's roots with and is meant to be played on (just like how someone will mention a game that's meant to be played on console/PS knowing some folk).

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Very interesting. Can't wait to see how this develops.

So Piracy is a plus for PS4 but bad for PC??.

And i already am playing starcraft 2 on my windows 10 pc . But if you think that to be true that just cos the PS4 is X86 it could easy emulate windows your wrong it doesnt work like that. The Original Xbox couldnt even emulate windows 98 but yet it had the specs to run it..

No need to emulate anything if you can unlock the bootloader. You could just install Windows on it! Hackers would need to write some additional drivers though, I don't think Windows supports all the custom parts in the PS4. Most important part would be the graphics driver. The results wouldn't come near a PC with the same specs, but it would still be fun to try it out!

And yes, it was actually possible to install Windows 98 on an original Xbox! Even Windows XP! The installation was a pain in the ass though and no one cared to bring customized drivers for all the hardware in it. But theroetically, you can perfectly fine transform an x86 console into a full-fledged PC. The only point in it is the proof-of-concept though. Anyone who REALLY wants a true PC experience should just get a PC in the end.
